NHL-National Hockey League roundup

April 20 (The Sports Xchange) - The NHL suspended Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw for one game for using a gay slur and fined him $5,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture at the game officials during a playoff loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night. Shaw reacted after being called for a penalty at 17:57 of the third period. He will sit out Game 5 of the series on Thursday night in St. Louis. "While Mr. Shaw was apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions," NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said Wednesday. "The emotion of the moment cannot and will not be a mitigating factor for the conduct that is expected of an NHL player." The Blues hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series. --- The Anaheim Ducks signed defenseman Keaton Thompson to a three-year entry-level contract after he led his team to the NCAA hockey championship. Thompson, 20, recorded 17 points (two goals, 15 assists) and 36 penalty minutes in 43 games with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks this season and helped his team win the 2015-16 NCAA title. The Devils Lake, N.D., native tallied two assists in four NCAA tournament games. Thompson, selected by Anaheim in the third round (87th overall) of the 2013 NHL draft, was one of 16 NCAA defensemen to achieve a plus-21 rating last season. --- The Detroit Red Wings recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Ouellet, 22, has spent the majority of the season with Grand Rapids, totaling a professional career-high 29 points (four goals, 25 assists) in 61 games with 66 penalty minutes. He has skated in five games with the Red Wings, logging one assist, two penalty minutes, four shots on goal, five hits, three blocked shots and three takeaways in 16:14 average time on ice.
