NHL Three Stars: Hickey, Tarasenko score in overtime
No. 1 Star: John Tavares, New York Islanders
The Isles captain broke a nine game goal-less drought with the first tally of the contest. His second point of the game came when he set up Thomas Hickey for an incredible redirect goal in overtime.
No. 2 Star: Vladimir Tarasenko, St. Louis Blues
Tarasenko led all Blues skaters with 10 shot attempts (6 SOG, 4 A/B). His only goal of the game came in overtime. It was not a good look for the Stars on defense. They got caught puck watching, turning their back on Tarasenko on the far side. Naturally, he made them pay.
No. 3 Star: Jamie Oleksiak, Dallas Stars
The six-foot-seven defenseman for the Stars doubled his career goal total in a single outing. While tying the game with 50 seconds remaining in regulation is impressive, it was his first goal of the night that caught viewers offguard. Who knew the big dude had such great hands?
Honorable Mention: Mark Jankowski made his NHL debut versus the Islanders. He was 63-percent on the faceoff dot in 10:18 TOI. Thomas Greiss improved to 8-4-4 on the year with his 25 save performance against the Flames. Sean Monahan scored the lone goal for Calgary … With his goal and two assists, Jamie Benn factored in to all Dallas scoring plays versus St. Louis. Julius Honka set up Benn and Oleksiak for their game tying goals. David Perron scored to extend his point streak to eight games. Jori Lehtera led the Blues in scoring with two assists.
Did You Know? The St. Louis Blues are 8-0-2 in their last 10 games at home.
Dishonorable Mention: Brian Elliott’s record drops to 3-10-1 on the season. Deryk Engelland received a two-minute minor for elbowing Shane Prince in the face. Deliberate chicken wing by Engelland or not?
… St. Louis allowed the Stars to come back twice, including a two goal deficit, before they put them away in overtime. Dan Hamhuis was a healthy scratch for Dallas for a second time this season. Robby Fabbri could have put the Blues up three goals if he didn’t miss the entire cage staring at him in the face.
