Nick Kyrgios believes he is in the “top five or top 10” ATP players on grass at the moment, saying he is comfortable on the surface.

After a couple of months on the sidelines, Kyrgios made a confident singles return on the grass at the Stuttgart Open last week as he reached the semi-final, defeating fifth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili before falling to Andy Murray.

The Australian has won six ATP singles titles, but all of them have come on hard courts, although he has always rated his grass game highly.

When asked by Tennis TV, “how do you think you rank at the moment among ATP players on grass, he replied: “I think on grass, I’d be top five, top 10 in the world, definitely.

“If I’m feeling good on grass, I feel really, really comfortable on it.”

The world No 65 continued his good form on the surface on Tuesday as he defeated Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the Halle Open.

Up next is second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was made to work for his win by Benjamin Bonzi from France. The Greek eventually prevailed 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-3.

Nick Kyrgios a ‘legitimate force’ at Wimbledon and a ‘semi-final is realistic this year’, says Aussie great

“I can say playing him on grass for sure is going to be quite difficult,” Tsitsipas said of Kyrgios. “I’m just going to go out there and enjoy myself. Let’s see what that brings.

“He’s fired up playing on the grass-court season. I’m fired up too. I really hope to have a great match against him and be able to really sustain the level at its very highest.”
