Nicole Kidman's mismatched heels and other overlooked outfit details from the Emmys

This is definitely not a lie: Nicole Kidman looked stunning in red Calvin Klein. (Photo: Getty Images)

The little things count, which is why red carpet looks are so much more than just the dress. At the Emmys on Sunday night, there was so much marvelousness — from head to toe — that might have gone missed.

Take, for example, Nicole Kidman’s high heels. All eyes were on this lady in red, especially after she won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie for her role in Big Little Lies. She turned heads on the red carpet in a gorgeous halter-style Calvin Klein gown with a tea-length hemline, which showed off her shoes underneath. In addition to the fact that she passed on a pedicure, the Aussie blonde’s pink strappy heels with sparkly detailing didn’t match. What at first glance might seem like a faux pas was in fact a purposeful move, as the shoes were sold together as a matching pair by Calvin Klein.

While one shoe has crystal embellishments on the toe strap, the other has matching embellishments on the ankle strap. Actress Naomie Harris wore the same shoes in yellow to the Oscars in February.

Just a cool million-plus draped down Jane Fonda’s back. (Photo: Getty Images)

Speaking of jewels, Jane Fonda got creative with hers last night. The actress, who surprised viewers with her long Ariana Grande-style ponytail, also switched things up in the accessory department. Fonda glistened in $2.5 million worth of emeralds and diamonds in a three-piece set by Gismondi 1754. Sounds flashy, right? Well, it could have been more so had she worn the necklace in front. The necklace features 70-plus carats of diamonds and 82 carats of emeralds, but Fonda had to turn around to flash them, as she wore the sparkler backward so that they draped down her back where the dress opened. The piece was designed to be worn in the front, but “minor adjustments enabled the piece to cascade down the back, as envisioned by stylist Tanya Gill,” according Gismondi 1754.

Lorraine Schwartz always supplies Sofia Vergara with the trendiest and blingiest jewels. (Photo: Getty Images)

While many of you were distracted by Sofia Vergara’s wedding-worthy Mark Zunino gown, you missed the accessory that gave the romantic look some edge. On the Modern Family star’s right hand, a black bejeweled snake ring was wrapped around her index finger. Taylor Swift would be proud.

Heidi Klum’s hoops were so big, they grazed her shoulders. (Photo: Getty Images)

On the topic of jewelry, Heidi Klum showed her hippie side with hers. The model and Project Runway host wore a simple red ethereal gown with beachy vibes and kept on theme with her accessories — mainly the huge hoop earrings almost hidden by her tousled hair. They were wooden with sparkly embellishments. She wore matching bracelets and even carried a wooden clutch.

Then there’s the back of Julianne Hough’s Marchesa gown, which was as much a party as the front, thanks to silken cherry blossoms that dotted the front and back of the black tulle gown. Here Hough proves that all parts of a dress are created equal and should be given the same amount of attention and detail.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown’s ballerina dress was accessorized with a white bandana. (Photo: Getty Images)

Hollywood’s darling Millie Bobby Brown didn’t let her fans down when she stepped onto the carpet in an off-white tea-length Calvin Klein dress. While the princess dress definitely wowed, it was what was wrapped around the waist that brought it home: a white bandana. The casual and unexpected accessory just further proves how cool the Stranger Things star is.

Laverne Cox’s Emmy nails had a meaningful message. (Photo: Getty Images)

Finally, Laverne Cox’s manicure deserves mention. While her metallic ensemble was on point, her matching nails with a meaning were the cherry on top. The shimmery black and silver polish on her pointy nails was Orly from a new limited-edition line, Celebrate Yourself by Laverne Cox. The sales proceeds from the line will be donated to hurricane relief efforts related to both Harvey and Irma.

It’s pretty safe to say the celebs definitely delivered in the details department at the 2017 Emmys.
