Nine area wrestlers headed to New Castle Semistate

Feb. 8—High school wrestlers entering Saturday's action just need two win in their first two matches to earn a berth in the IHSAA state finals.

Area wrestlers are competing in the semistate at New Castle. Wrestling is set to start at 9 a.m. The brackets for Saturday's semistate have been released, so the wrestlers know what they have to do to earn the ticket to the state finals.

Greensburg's lone semistate qualifier is Cayden Beagle at 106 pounds. Beagle, a freshman, is 22-14 on the season and placed fourth at last week's regional. Beagle will face Westfield's Keegan Carson (29-10) in the first round.

Batesville had a big day last week at the regional. All five regional qualifiers advanced to the semistate.

Junior Damien Dance won the regional title at 165 to stay undefeated on the season at 40-0. Dance will face Tipton's William Wolford (22-14) in the semistate first round.

Junior Max Amberger (38-2) finished runner-up at the regional at 285. Amberger drew Frankton's Ty Everson (26-9) to open his semistate action.

Senior David Maher (31-5) placed third at the regional at 157. Maher drew Purdue Polytechnic's Silas Foster (35-2) in the opening round of the semistate.

At 120, freshman Adam Brewer (27-10) took third place at the regional and drew Franklin Central's Richard Rogers (30-5) in Saturday's first round.

Junior Andrew Jones (25-7) finished fourth at 215 at last week's regional. Jones will face Cathedral's Jackson Weingart (31-5) in the first round of the semistate.

Rushville has three semistate qualifiers.

At 106, freshman Briggs Tackett (33-7) was the runner-up at the regional. Tackett drew Lebanon sophomore Braxton Aragon (34-7) in the opening round.

At 157, sophomore Denver Campbell (21-15) finished fourth at the regional and will face Warren Central's Anthony Cashman (31-3) Saturday in the first round.

At 175, sophomore Sam Pavey (29-9) won the regional title at Richmond. In Saturday's first round, Pavey will face Greenfield-Central's Silas Frye (23-10).
