Eddie Nketiah will sign a new Arsenal contract after originally deciding to leave on a free transfer this summer, according to David Ornstein.

The 22-year-old was expected to leave the Gunners in search of first-team football when his contract expires next month.

Mikel Arteta has always emphasised his desire to keep hold of the England under-21s all-time top scorer.

Nketiah played a lot more in recent weeks after replacing Alexandre Lacazette in Arteta’s starting XI. He scored five goals in his last seven games to conclude the season as Arsenal finished fifth behind Tottenham.

Reporting for The Athletic, Ornstein has revealed that the young striker will renew his contract after ‘changing his mind about leaving’ this summer.

His contract is expected to last ‘up to five years’ with the deal ‘still in the process of being finalised’.

Numerous clubs, including Crystal Palace and West Ham were reportedly interested in signing Nketiah on a free transfer.

Prior to Ornstein’s report, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that Arsenal had put their ‘final’ contract offer on the table after the player had turned down two previous offers.

Nketiah finished the season with 10 goals in 28 matches across all competitions. He scored a hat-trick in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup quarter-final win against Sunderland.

Speaking earlier this month, ex-Gunners midfielder Emmanuel Petit urged his former club to keep hold of Nketiah.

“He has to stay!” Petit told the Metro. “He’s playing with anger. He was asking for more game time, and he’s taken the responsibility on the pitch and scored important goals.

“Nketiah is a young talented player with a big motivation to become a star, which means if he can follow the steps of [Gabriel] Martinelli, [Emile] Smith Rowe and [Bukayo] Saka that would be a very good thing for him and for Arsenal, but I definitely want him to stay at Arsenal.”
