Arsenal will reportedly offer striker Eddie Nketiah another new contract given his fresh role, but will have to convince him he will remain in it.

Nketiah has appeared sparingly for Arsenal during his time as a first-team player. The 22-year-old has made just 17 appearances in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons.

Given his fringe role in the side, and his contract running out, it has seemed sure that he would soon move on. However, the striker has played some part in the last 14 league games for the Gunners.

In fact, he has started each of the last four, replacing Alexandre Lacazette as the main striker. Nketiah bagged a brace in the 4-2 win over Chelsea last month, too.

Despite not contributing to any goals in the last two, Arsenal have won those games, against Manchester United and West Ham.

As such, it seems he has slotted into the side with ease. Given his impressive performances, and new role as starting striker, Arsenal are reportedly keen on keeping him around.

The Daily Mail reports that the Gunners are plotting a last-gasp attempt at giving him a new deal.

That is despite him apparently having rejected multiple contract offers. Those were before he entered his new role as Arsenal’s talisman, though.

Arsenal will have to convince him that he will be able to keep that role.

It seems unlikely that he would want to stay, were he not playing games. That is presumably why he has rejected the previous offers of a new deal at The Emirates.

Two obstacles ahead of Nketiah contract

There are still a couple of reasons that Nketiah may reject the new contract offer. He may not be able to keep his fresh role, should Arsenal sign a new striker – as they appear keen on doing.

They have been linked with a move for Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus. Should he join, he may well be ahead of Nketiah in the pecking order.

What’s more, Nketiah’s representatives have apparently been in touch with a number of clubs, who would like to take him on board.

Interest from Crystal Palace has been mentioned, where he could be the first-choice striker. As such, securing Nketiah to a new deal may still prove tough, but there is certainly a chance of it happening.
