No. 2 seed Aurora races away from No. 7 seed East Newton

Jan. 29—Aurora girls toppled East Newton 55-24 in the opening round of the Mercy/Warrior Classic on Monday night at McAuley Catholic High School.

The Houn' Dawgs were led by junior Kylee Cole's 28 points. Cole needed just 14 in the game to reach 1,000 for her career.

East Newton — the seventh seed in the tournament — trailed 11-5 after one quarter of play and 28-9 at halftime. The Patriots were led Cameran Clement with 9 points, and she scored 6 in the second half.

Aurora — seeded second — improved to 17-2 with the victory as East Newton fell to 4-15. These two teams met to start the season, and the Houn' Dawgs won that one 70-23.

The Patriots will play McAuley Catholic (5-14) in the consolation semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 6 McAuley fell to No. 3 College Heights 65-40 on Monday night.

The Houn' Dawgs will get the Cougars (9-9) at 8 p.m. Wednesday for a shot at the championship game.
