Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Khan has confirmed speculation that circulated on Friday evening that a deal to send Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona has finally been agreed.

The Poland international is still in Munich but will fly to Miami on Sunday, where Barcelona will begin their pre-season tour, for a medical before signing his three-year contract in a deal worth £42.5million.

And speaking to BILD, Sport reported Kahn’s comments, in which he explained that the formalities just need to be completed.

Khan said: “We have a verbal agreement with Barca and now it’s just a matter of signing the contracts. At the end of the day Barcelona have offered offered a quantity that makes the sale of Lewandowski absolutely sensible for us.”

The former Germany keeper also revealed why Bayern were able to part with their talisman.

He added: “In addition, we recently had a great success in the transfer market. We have signed a world-class player in attack, Sadio Mane.”

“Tying yourself to something due to an excess of stubbornness or because of your own ego is a sign of weakness for me. It’s about always finding the best for the club, the team and the fans.”

“My job consists of doing the best for Bayern and we have always acted from a position of strength. In the end, we decided the best thing was to give Robert permission to leave.”

Bayern complete Lewandowski U-turn

Khan’s comments mark a complete U-turn over Bayern’s stance on Lewandowski.

The Bundesliga giants previously insisted that the striker would be allowed to leave before his contract run out in 2023.

It’s also reported that Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann helped push the deal through after a conversation with the club’s hierarchy.

They are now expected to find a replacement for the prolific marksman. Bayern have been boosted, however, by the news that winger Serge Gnabry has committed his future to the club.
