Former England captain Michael Vaughan reacted shocked as India captain Virat Kohli announced the playing XI for the fourth Test at the Oval and revealed that off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was not included. England won the toss and Joe Root chose to bat first on a green top pitch.

Ravi Ashwin was not included in the first three Test matches of the five-match series against England, but there were high hopes from cricket experts and fans alike that after the drubbing India received at the hands of the England team in the third Test match at Leeds, which the visitors lost by an innings and 76 runs, the Tamil Nadu offie will get a game at Oval which favors spin.

However, a green look pitch influenced Indian team management’s decision which made two changes in the playing XI as Ishant Sharma was replaced by Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav came in for Mohammad Shami. However, the news of the non-selection of Ravi Ashwin led to Michael Vaughan tweeting in angst.

“The non selection of @ashwinravi99 has to be greatest NON selection we have ever witnessed across 4 Tests in the UK !!! 413 Test wickets & 5 Test 100s !!!! #ENGvIND Madness,” tweeted Vaughan.

We Would Have Bowled First: Virat Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli talked about the team combination for the Oval Test after losing the toss and revealed that he would have bowled first as well if he had won the toss. He also revealed that both fast bowler Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami are battling niggles and hence Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur came in for them.

“We would have bowled first as well but toss isn’t something you can control. Need to be prepared for either. We’re looking forward to putting runs on the board. Two changes — Ishant and Shami have niggles — Umesh and Shardul are back.

For us, it’s about partnerships, we can’t focus too much on individuals. The opening partnerships have been good, it’s about getting more partnerships. We got a few days left on this tour, the series is poised nicely and there is going to be no shortage of effort from our side,” said Virat Kohli at the toss.

India playing XI for the Oval Test: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.
