Northern Ireland vs England - LIVE!

England look to continue their flying start to Euro 2022 in their final Group A match tonight as they face Northern Ireland at St Mary’s. Top spot and a quarter-final place has already been secured by the Lionesses, after an 8-0 hammering of Norway in their last match, so they have the luxury of a dead rubber.

Despite that, Sarina Wiegman has opted to name an unchanged side once again, keen to keep the momentum going and avoid any slip-ups going into the knockout stages where Spain are likely last-eight opponents. Wiegman herself will be missing tonight, after testing positive for Covid.

FT: Northern Ireland 0-5 England

21:52 , Matt Verri

No added time... that’s all at St Mary’s!

Ruthless again from England, who looked imperious once they hit their stride after a low start.

Three wins from three and they march into the quarter-finals.

21:49 , Matt Verri

89 mins: And again! Toone slides the ball through to Mead, she cuts it back perfectly for Russo and she seemingly has a simple finish from six yards to seal a hat-trick.

Defenders come flying in, Russo put off perhaps and she fires over the bar. Massive chance for the match ball.

21:48 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Russo not far away from a hat-trick!

Another lovely move from England, worked out to Carter who has so much space on the right wing. Clips a great cross into the box, just too much on it maybe for Russo and she can’t keep the header down.

21:45 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Almost for Mead! Kelly’s cross into the box is punched out by Burns straight to Mead on the edge of the box.

She brings it down, curls an effort towards the top corner but it floats just wide of the far post.

21:43 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Mead wins a free-kick, which she will take herself.

Whips it in with plenty of pace, too much height on it though and nobody can reach it.

21:40 , Matt Verri

80 mins: No penalty, replays clearly show it didn’t strike an arm.

Northern Ireland on a rare attack, McGuinness strikes at goal from a fair way out. Blocked.

21:39 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Kirby dinks a ball through into the box, looked to have hit a Northern Ireland arm but the appeals are waved away.

VAR check going on in the background, hopefully will be done before the end of the match.

GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-5 England | Kelsie Burrows (OG) 76'

21:37 , Matt Verri

So unfortunate for Northern Ireland. Ball swung into the box by Mead, Burrows sticks a leg out and it flies off her and loops over the goalkeeper. Nothing Burns can do.

21:35 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Carter on for the final 15 minutes, replacing Bronze at right-back. She plays a nice ball inside to Kirby, but the offside flag is swiftly up.

Attendance of more than 30,000 confirmed at St Mary’s, met with big cheers.

21:33 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Terrible pass out from Burns, straight to Mead. She’s quickly closed down before she can take advantage.

Comes out to Walsh, who tries her luck from 20 yards out. Always rising well over the bar.

21:31 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Northern Ireland having probably their first sustained spell of possession at the back, knocking it around the defence and back to Burns.

England then fly into the press though, Northern Ireland very nearly caught out and they have to just lump it forward.

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary's

21:29 , Matt Verri

No signs yet that England are easing off, even with the game won and a quarter-final looming. The hosts are still looking for more goals as we enter the final 25 minutes.

21:27 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Holloway off, Magee on for Northern Ireland who need all the fresh legs they can find. Their first major tournament, such an achievement to make it but it’s going to end with three defeats.

Walsh looks for the ball over the top, Kelly flicks it on but nobody in a white shirt has made the run.

21:24 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Toone vs Burns continues.

The England midfielder is going for goal every time she can even vaguely see the Northern Ireland goalkeeper. Burns up to the task again.

Toone will not be content until she gets her goal, it seems...

21:21 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Kelly on for England, replacing Hemp. So much depth in attacking areas.

Mead stays on, she’ll be desperate to add at least one more to her tally as she goes for the Golden Boot.

21:19 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Toone has space to drive into, no interest in the pass and goes for goal from just outside the box. Not far away from finding the bottom corner.

These substitutes are determined to make an impact!

21:17 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Holloway gets a crucial touch on the ball, Williamson had very nearly put Mead through on goal. Ninth corner of the match coming up for the Lionesses. Northern Ireland being torn apart.

Good punch away from Burns to clear the danger.

GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-4 England | Alessia Russo 53’

21:14 , Matt Verri

She is out with a point to prove. Toone fires the ball in, Russo turns absolutely brilliantly and then finishes past the onrushing Burns.

Incredible first touch.

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary's

21:13 , Matt Verri

Another well-taken goal by Alessia Russo and with her first touch, I think. If she can get another goal or two here, it may give Sarina Wiegman pause for thought when picking her quarter-final side.

21:11 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Got to feel there are more goals to come from England, they’ve come out in the second-half really up for it.

They’ve now got the record for most goals scored in the group stage of a European Championship. May well extend that in the next 40 minutes.

GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-3 England | Alessia Russo 48'

21:09 , Matt Verri

She needed just over two minutes! Lovely move out wide, Mead clips a ball into the middle and Russo’s header wrong-foots Burns and finds its way into the corner.

What an introduction.

21:07 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Well then. Greenwood gives the ball away with her first touch and Wade is briefly clean through on goal. England get enough shirts back to cover the danger though, chance goes for Northern Ireland.

Back underway!

21:05 , Matt Verri

Bright, Stanway and White the three who have been replaced.

We’re up and running again at St Mary’s!

21:04 , Matt Verri

Nearly 80% possession for England, 17 shots... dominant stats as you’d expect. Wasn’t quite as comfortable as they would suggest though.

Lionesses very much in control throughout, but they were being frustrated by some resolute defending up until that quick-fire double.

Changes from England at the break. Russo, Toone and Greenwood coming on for the Lionesses.

Brilliant finish to open the scoring!

20:57 , Matt Verri

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary’s

20:52 , Matt Verri

Mead makes it five goals in the tournament already, leaving her as the clear favourite for the Golden Boot. The big question now is how ruthless are England prepared to be in the second half, with one eye on Wednesday’s quarter-final.

HT: Northern Ireland 0-2 England

20:50 , Matt Verri

Northern Ireland held firm for much of the half, but two quick goals from Kirby and Mead have put the Lionesses in charge going into the break.

Will England now make some changes at the break to rest some of their stars?

20:47 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Four minutes added on.

Not what Northern Ireland wanted to see, England absolutely rampant now. Space has really opened up.

Mead back to Bronze, who briefly has space inside the box but McGuinness gets back well and wins a free-kick.

GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-2 England | Beth Mead 44'

20:46 , Matt Verri

Falls to her on the edge of the box, cuts onto her left foot as the bodies fly in. Pokes an effort at goal, takes a slight deflection off Furness and rolls into the bottom corner.

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary’s

20:45 , Matt Verri

England were looking for a moment of class and, perhaps predictably, Fran Kirby is the provider with a lovely curling finish. That’s a shame for Northern Ireland, who were minutes from a well-earned half-time breather.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Will that open the match up now? No sign of a change of approach from Northern Ireland, who will be happy enough just to get it through to half-time now.

Having to defend for their lives though. Mead with a lovely run, plays it back to Stanway who has yet another effort blocked. Corner for England.

GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-1 England | Fran Kirby 41'

20:41 , Matt Verri

Can’t say it hasn’t been coming. Hemp’s strike is blocked, comes out to Kirby and it’s absolutely wonderful from the edge of the box.

Rolls into her path, just cushions a curling effort into the top corner. Perfect.

20:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: OFF THE LINE!

Brilliant move from England. Ball played through to Kirby, chops back inside and lays it across the face of goal for Stanway.

She slides in and gets the effort on target, Holloway is right back on her line to clear though. Superb defending.

Bright wins the header from the resulting corner, flicked wide.

20:38 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Bright had a decent effort from a mile out earlier - this time it’s even further out.

We’ll go with two miles out on this occasion, unfortunately it flies three miles wide. She’ll be trying her luck from her own penalty box if this stays goalless for much longer.

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary’s

20:37 , Matt Verri

Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels is right on the edge of his technical area, kicking every ball with his players, but Arnold Veurink has barely left his seat.

Easy to overstate the importance of these things but are England missing a presence on the touchline?

20:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: McGuinness with a great ball in behind, Bright gets caught out and Wade is through. Goes round Earps, can’t get it on target from a tight angle.

Not that it matters, offside flag then goes up.

20:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: White makes the run in behind and the ball comes, but Burns’ starting position is great and she’s quickly out to gather.

Stanway then slides the ball through to Bronze, tries to bundle her way through McGuinness. Has to settle for a corner.

20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Mead wins a very soft free-kick 30 yards out. Maybe a bit more, too far out for a shot anyway.

Hemp and Mead standing over it. Mead clips it in, brilliant delivery... Bronze heads wide! Completely free, just over six-yards out. Really should have scored, but she flicks it wide.

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Not happening for England, Williamson goes for an ambitious pass out wide and it’s straight out of play.

Still very little of Hemp, while Mead has barely had a touch. Impressive from Northern Ireland.

20:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Northern Ireland still having the odd promising moment on the counter attack, just don’t have the clinical edge when they need it.

Latest break swiftly breaks down and the pattern of comfortable England possession is resumed.

20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

England should be in front. Bronze flies forward and slides a wonderful pass in behind for White.

She’s clean through on goal, pulls the shot agonisingly wide of the far post as it rolls towards the empty goal. Burns has stayed down after flying out to try and close the angle.

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary’s

20:24 , Matt Verri

This is obviously very one-sided but a well-drilled Northern Ireland are managing to restrict England to half chances. Has the feel of a game which will open up if (when?) England nick a goal or two.

20:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Almost halfway through the opening period and Northern Ireland have kept England at bay.

Bronze clips a cross into the box, Mead does well to head it down for Kirby. She’s forced to go all the way back to Williamson, mass of green shirts in her way.

Bright loses patience and goes for goal from a mile out, great strike. Well saved.

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Nearly brilliant from Hemp, who cuts inside onto her left foot and looks to slide a reverse pass through to Stanway.

Good run in behind from the midfielder, just too much on the ball though and Burns can rush off her line to claim.

20:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: ALMOST!

Corner swung in, drops for Williamson and she heads it back into the six-yard box. Very nearly falls for Mead, but her effort is blocked as she looks set to hammer it home from close range.

Third corner in a row coming up, Hemp’s delivery really impressive. This time out to Stanway, who slips. Now Kirby, weak shot. Pressure being piled on but Northern Ireland are hanging on.

Dan Kilpatrick at St Mary’s

20:16 , Matt Verri

England took the lead with a fortuitous penalty in the 8-0 rout of Norway but no repeat here for now after the referee reverses the decision to award them a spot-kick for handball.

The ball clearly struck Beth Mead’s arm in the build up. Reprieve for Northern Ireland...but for how long?

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Decent chance for Northern Ireland, as Holloway plays a nice pass through to Wade.

The striker tries to find a first-time effort into the far corner, but makes no real contact. Let-off for the Lioneses.

20:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Williamson drives out of defence, beats a couple of challenges and pokes the ball through to Stanway.

She has Hemp in space to her right, eventually plays the pass out wide but it’s too heavy and the winger can’t catch up with it. Haven’t seen much of Hemp or Mead so far.

20:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Northern Ireland have barely had a kick since that bright start. England dominating possession.

Stanway picking up brilliant positions, finding a lot of space. Goes for goal but it’s blocked and rolls through to Burns.

20:09 , Matt Verri

No penalty... free-kick given against England for a handball from Mead a few seconds earlier.

Northern Ireland survive and we’re back underway!

20:08 , Matt Verri

VAR check is once again taking an absolute age. After all that, referee is told to go and look at the monitor.

Could have just done that straight away. Anway, referee over to watch the replays. Rafferty’s arms were pretty much down by her side.

20:06 , Matt Verri

Rafferty isn’t happy but the referee has pointed to the spot!

Ball comes out to Stanway, who absolutely hammers a shot at goal. Rafferty jumps to block, it cannons off her arm and the penalty is awarded.

VAR will check it, of course...

20:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: England go on the attack for the first time, Kirby immediately involved. Bronze lays it back to Bright who whips a deep cross in, Burns does well to get it away under pressure from White.

Williamson seeing plenty of the ball and she has the freedom to stroll out of defence. Saying that, she looks for Hemp and passes it straight out of play.

20:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Great start from Northern Ireland.

Wade gets in behind, into the box and goes for goal from a tight angle. Earps parries it straight out, luckily there’s an England shirt there ready to clear the danger.

McGuiness then wins it back high up the pitch, late whistle eventually comes. Bronze had been fouled.

19:59 , Matt Verri

National anthems done in double quick time - decision made to play God Save The Queen just the once.

We’re ready top get this final group-stage match up and running.

Here we go!

Teams are out at St Mary’s!

Leah Williamson leads England out, another brilliant atmosphere. Don’t think the fans are going to allow this to be a low-key affair...

Stanway tells England to keep standards high

19:52 , Matt Verri

Georgia Stanway insists England have “done nothing yet” as she urges the Lionesses not to treat tonight as a dead rubber.

“Any international game is of a high standard and we’ve still go to be at our best,” Stanway tells BBC Sport.

“We want three more points, to pass with flying colours.”

Not long now!

19:43 , Matt Verri

Around 15 minutes to go until kick-off at St Mary’s.

Veurink has given this update on what Wiegman’s involvement will be tonight: “She is not here, but she will be.”

Sure she’ll be on the phone to one of the coaching staff throughout the match.

Veurink steps up

19:39 , Matt Verri

Reminder than Sarina Wiegman is missing tonight, due to testing positive for Covid.

It means assistant Arjan Veurink will be taking charge - he’ll be glad it’s a dead rubber and not a massive winner-takes-all affair!

Good evening to keep cool!

Shiels: We want to go out with something to remember

19:20 , Matt Verri

Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels has been giving his pre-match thoughts, urging his side to enjoy the occasion and finish the tournament on a high.

“I don’t know [how they feel] - sometimes you think they’re nice and relaxed and the performance doesn’t match that and sometimes they look edgy and the performance doesn’t match that,” he told BBC Sport.

“It’s hard to tell but we want to go out of the tournament by leaving some sort of memento for us.”

Unchanged Lionesses

18:59 , Matt Verri

Wigeman was not lying!

She hasn’t made widespread changes... in fact she hasn’t made any. England unchanged from the side that won their opening two matches of the tournament.

Chloe Kelly, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo among those who were pushing for a start but once again have to settle for a place on the bench.

England to entertain again?

18:34 , Matt Verri

England were singing along to ABBA in the dressing room after Monday’s 8-0 win over Norway secured qualification for the quarter-finals, but Northern Ireland would be wrong to think that is a sign the Lionesses could take their eye off the ball tonight, writes Simon Collings.

The game is a dead rubber for England, who face either Denmark or Spain in Brighton next Wednesday for a place in the last four, but although Wiegman has the luxury of changing her whole XI and resting the players from that record win, such a plan is not in her thinking.

“I believe in rhythm,” Wiegman said. “I think when you have nine days in between the Norwegian game and the quarter-finals that’s too long. You need more rhythm and keep the focus, and keep playing. So you couldn’t expect lots of rotations. During the game, probably, but not before the start.”

That is probably the last thing Northern Ireland wanted to hear.

What an evening for it!

Wiegman absent due to Covid

18:15 , Matt Verri

Sarina Wiegman has tested positive for Covid and will not be on the touchline for tonight’s match.

An FA statement read: “Head Coach Sarina Wiegman has tested positive for Covid and will undertake a period of recovery at the squad’s base camp.

“Assistant coach Arjan Veurink will lead the team for tonight’s fixture against Northern Ireland. Wiegman will remain in remote contact with the players and technical staff and will be monitored regularly with a view to returning to all elements of her role as soon as possible.”

18:05 , Matt Verri

Even with progression to the quarter-finals secured, England will be keen to keep confidence high and ensure they do into the knockout stages on a high.

It’s unlikely to be the absolute hammering the Lionesses pulled off last time, but the Northern Ireland defence is not good enough to keep the Lionesses out, regardless of who lines up in attack.

England win, 4-0.

Team news

17:54 , Matt Verri

Demi Stokes will be absent for the Lionesses, after she picked up minor knee injury. There is better news for England though, with Lotte Wubben-Moy rejoining the squad in the build-up to the match having recovered from Covid.

Wiegman has insisted a strong side will be named despite it being a dead rubber, though Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone are among those pushing for a first start of the tournament.

Northern Ireland can be expected to name a strong line-up despite already being out of the tournament, as they look to produce an enormous upset to end their campaign on a high.
