‘Not good enough’ – Shearer blasts Man Utd star who has had ‘enough chances’ and should leave this summer
Alan Shearer didn’t hold back on his verdict of one Manchester United star following their disappointing defeat against West Ham.
The result leaves Erik ten Hag’s side in a precarious position. Liverpool are one of the form teams in the league right now and are only one point behind United.
Ten Hag’s side have now lost back-to-back games in the Premier League and risk missing out on Champions League football next season.
Shearer has been less than impressed with Anthony Martial of late and he thinks that it is time he is moved on in the summer.
“Whatever your opinion is, I think he’s had enough time Martial. You don’t need to make any big decision on him because I think the decision has already been made or it should already have been made,” he told Premier League Productions.
The French forward had a couple of chances against West Ham but struggled to make them count.
He has missed a large chunk of this season through injury and has scored just four league goals so far.
“He’s been there long enough, he’s had enough chances. He’s not good enough to take Manchester United to where they want to go. If he was good enough he would be starting on a regular basis and he would be scoring goals.
“He’s had his time and it hasn’t worked for him, that’s my opinion. We could have been sat here for another few hours and we never felt that they were going to find the back of the net.
“Now, that’s not just a problem that’s happened today, that happened in the last game and in fact months. It’s an issue they’re going to have to work out.
“Having said all that, when you look at the bigger picture, they’ve got a trophy in the bag, they’re in a cup final and if they finish in the top four, that will have been a very successful season.”
Across 294 appearances for the club, Martial has scored 86 goals which is a strike rate of a goal every 3.4 matches.
However, the 27-year-old has often struggled to nail down a consistent starting spot because of injuries.
Since signing for the club in 2015, he has only started in 20 league matches in two of his eight seasons at the club.
Given United are likely to sign a striker or two in the summer, his time at Old Trafford could now be running out.
His current deal is set to run until 2024, but United would surely be willing to listen to offers for the French forward this summer.
