Should I do it? Should I not? What if I get in trouble? What if something bad happens? Okay, you know what, I am overthinking this, I am going to do it. But what if I regret it? No, but what if I regret not doing it? You know what, I'll just come back another day.

I never went back.

All those voices rushed into my head like a bullet train through a tunnel, going a million miles a second. You may think that it was a pretty major decision, but it was not. I was at the time trying to decide whether to get layers in my hair. I got so overwhelmed and panicked. Why? Because I have had the same very boring haircut since I was five, going to the hairdresser alone was a challenge. This was my first trip in ten years and it was a major step out of my comfort zone. But, sometimes getting out of your comfort zone is exactly what you need- it was most definitely what I needed.

When we are young, we are constantly told to get outside our comfort zone and try new things. I never understood why this was so important, but now, I am beginning to understand how the very, comfortable comfort zone can be harmful. I don’t mean that in the paranoid it will be the end of your type of idea, but I do think you will get a lot more out of life if you step outside of it.

My comfort zone includes a very rigid heavily timetabled overly-structured lifestyle which includes having the same glasses for the last five years, the same hairstyle ( a very tight ponytail) at all times and a pretty set wardrobe. It can get a little monotonous, to say the least, but I’m comfortable with it, so why should I change it? If isn’t broken, why fix it?

Well for the very simple reason I stated above, it is monotonous and can get quite boring. So I encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone whatever it may be and try something different. Whether that be layers, bungee jumping or anything else, we all need to try something which is outside of our comfort zone. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life!
