Nottingham Forest are furious with the Senegal Football Association as fears escalate that Cheikhou Kouyate will miss a significant part of the season.

Kouyate is facing at least two months out with a torn hamstring and Forest are understood to be “extremely frustrated” with Senegal’s treatment of the midfielder at the World Cup.

The 32-year-old was stretchered off in Senegal’s first group game against the Netherlands and did not play in any of the remaining games

Forest are deeply unhappy with what they regard as a poor diagnosis of the injury and lack of care for Kouyate, who may not return until March at the earliest.

Kouyate was signed on a free transfer by Forest this summer after his contract expired at Crystal Palace, making 13 appearances so far this season.

Forest return to action on December 21 when they face Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup fourth round, and then play at least a further 10 matches before the end of February.

Steve Cooper, the Forest head coach, said on Friday: “He is still going through some more scans, to determine the real extent of it, but he isn’t going to be back soon.”

Senegal were knocked out of the World Cup by England in the round of 16 stage.
