Nottingham Forest hit by potential 'fitness concern' to key man ahead of Arsenal clash
Ola Aina is said to have returned to Nottingham Forest early from international duty amid “concerns about his fitness”.
The full-back started Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Benin Republic on Thursday but was substituted in the final minutes of the match. Reports from his homeland claim he has since left the camp and has been ruled out of Monday’s clash with Rwanda.
Allnigeriasoccer report Aina has headed back to the UK for “a proper medical assessment”. It is said there are “concerns” about his fitness due to a knock picked up in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, with national team physios attending to him after he had been substituted.
Score Nigeria report the defender “suffered some difficulties and fatigue” during the draw in Abidjan. In a separate article, the same publication quote coach Augustine Eguavoen as telling Eagle7fm sports radio station: “Forest sent a private jet to get him back to England for their game against Arsenal.”
Nigeria’s point against Benin clinched their qualification for next year’s AFCON. Aina was replaced by Bright Osayi-Samuel in the 83rd minute on Thursday.
The 28-year-old has been one of the first names on the team-sheet for the Reds this season. He has been a key figure amid head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s focus on tightening up at the back.
Having a settled defence has paid dividends for Forest. They have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League after 11 games, with their 10 goals conceded only bettered by league leaders Liverpool’s six against.
The Reds return to action after the international break with a trip to face Arsenal on Saturday, November 23 (3pm kick-off). They lost 3-1 at home to Newcastle United before the hiatus but are fifth in the table.
