Chris Wood moved joint-level with Bryan Roy on Nottingham Forest’s list of all-time top Premier League scorers as his penalty clinched a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town.

The Reds went into the clash on the banks of the Trent looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats. And they were boosted by Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson getting the green light to feature after the duo missed out against Arsenal due to injury.

Gibbs-White almost made an immediate impact on his return to the side. The England international headed a corner narrowly wide with less than a minute on the clock.

Ryan Yates had an effort cleared off the line soon after as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men made a positive start to proceedings. The visitors worked their way into the game, though, and Forest needed a last-ditch clearance from Ola Aina to deny Cameron Burgess and keep the score at 0-0.

Following a scrappy first half, it didn’t take long for the hosts to break the deadlock after the restart. Wood thumped the ball in from the penalty spot with 49 minutes gone after Jota had been fouled by Sam Szmodics.

Murillo wasn’t far away from making it 2-0 a few minutes later but was denied by a good save. With just the one goal in it, it made for a slightly nervy finale but the hosts came through to clinch all three points. Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at the City Ground.

Matz Sels: Didn’t really have a great deal to do, even though the visitors caused Forest a few problems over the course of the afternoon. Nevertheless, a welcome clean-sheet. Rating: 7/10

Ola Aina: Came to the rescue with an important goalline clearance in the first half. Proved to be a big moment in the game and summed up an all-round excellent contribution. Rating: 8.5/10

Nikola Milenkovic: Dealt with the threat well as Ipswich looked dangerous at times. Experience came into play to help his team claim an important win. Rating: 8.5/10

Murillo: But for a brilliant save, would have had his second goal in the Garibaldi as he got a header on target after the break. Showed his usual level of quality when on the ball. Rating: 8.5/10

Neco Williams: First start for the Reds since August for the Welshman. Took on some of the set-piece responsibility - didn’t always get them right but the effort was definitely there throughout. Rating: 8/10

Ryan Yates: Drew a round of applause with a cheeky bit of skill in the first half, and that came after he had forced a last-ditch clearance from off the line. Dug in when required. Rating: 8/10

Elliot Anderson: A big plus to have him fit and available again. Put in a busy showing and worked hard, just looked to be tiring a little before being replaced. Rating: 7.5/10

Jota Silva: Deserved his first Premier League start and seemed determined to make it count by starting very positively. Always keen to get involved and that attitude resulted in him winning the penalty. Rating: 7.5/10

Morgan Gibbs-White: Relief all round to have him back after last week’s absence. Looked the most likely to create something in a stop-start first half as had a few promising moments. Rating: 7.5/10

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Not quite at his best. Had some threatening moments but at times Forest in general couldn’t find the last-bit of quality to make them count. Rating: 7/10

Chris Wood: An emphatic penalty. Took his time about it and finished with aplomb to seal the win and draw level with Bryan Roy on the club’s list of all-time Premier League scorers with 24 goals. Rating: 7.5/10

Subs

Nicolas Dominguez (for Anderson, 71mins): Slightly hard done by at finding himself out of the starting line-up. Added some energy in the closing stages. Rating: 7/10

Anthony Elanga (for Silva, 77mins): Yet to hit his top level this season. Didn’t really get chance to make too much of an impact on this occasion. Rating: 7/10

Alex Moreno (for Williams, 77mins): Steady enough when he came on. A big decision for Nuno when it comes to deciding who to play at full-back next week. Rating: 7/10

Morato (for Gibbs-White, 78mins): Called upon once again to help see out the final minutes for three points. Has a presence about him when he comes on. Rating: 7.5/10

Ramon Sosa (for Hudson-Odoi, 88mins): Didn’t get long to really have an influence on the game. Always has an energy about him, though. Rating: 7/10
