Nottingham Forest predicted XI vs Ipswich as Nuno sweating on trio's fitness and key calls loom
Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has some big decisions to make and some key issues to address as he looks ahead to this weekend’s clash with Ipswich Town.
The Reds have shipped six goals in their last two games, conceding three apiece against Newcastle United and Arsenal either side of the international break. It is a stat Nuno admitted to being “worried” about when he faced the media after his team’s 3-0 defeat to the Gunners - not least because defensive solidity had been a feature of the opening weeks of the season.
The Portuguese was also left frustrated by the visitors’ failure to record a single effort on target at the Emirates Stadium on their return to action after the two-week hiatus. Attack was another area where Nuno said Forest had “come up short”.
Getting back to what they had previously been doing so well - at both ends of the pitch - will be the aim for the Reds when the Tractor Boys visit the City Ground on Saturday (3pm kick-off). And it has the makings of being an important game.
Successive defeats is certainly no cause for alarm Trentside, especially as Nuno’s side are seventh in the table. But with a tough double-header away to the Manchester clubs to come next week, getting back to winning ways would be timely.
Nuno will be sweating on the fitness of some important players for the fixture. Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson were both absent from the match squad in the capital while Anthony Elanga came off at half-time with a shoulder problem.
The latter had initially carried on after receiving treatment on the pitch, only to then make way at the break. He was due to have a scan to assess the issue. Nuno said post-match that he hoped Gibbs-White and Anderson would be available to face Ipswich, although admitted the former was closest out of the two to being fit.
Having either Gibbs-White or Anderson - or both - back would be a huge boost for Forest as the team lacked a creative spark against the Gunners. It might be that Nuno is reluctant to risk both on Saturday, though, if there is even the slightest doubt about their fitness.
If there is a question mark over Elanga, it could be that Jota Silva is in line for his first Premier League start. The Portuguese has arguably done enough in his cameo appearances to suggest he is worthy of consideration regardless, and Nuno referenced the energy he brought when he replaced Elanga for the second half last weekend.
It would come as no surprise if a change is also made up front. Chris Wood was on the bench against Arsenal after travelling halfway across the world while on duty for New Zealand. Taiwo Awoniyi did well enough when handed a rare start but it is unlikely he will have moved past top scorer Wood in the pecking order.
Elsewhere, Nuno may well consider making an alteration in midfield. James Ward-Prowse was recalled to the line-up at the Emirates but endured a difficult afternoon. The partnership of Ryan Yates and Nicolas Dominguez had been effective previously, so it might be a case of reverting to what was working well when Ipswich come to town.
Forest predicted XI: Sels; Aina, Milenkovic, Murillo, Moreno; Yates, Dominguez; Jota, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Wood.
