Nottingham Forest are considering offloading Jesse Lingard in January after a disappointing start to his time at the City Ground, TEAMtalk has been told.

Lingard was Forest’s marquee signing on a free transfer from Manchester United in their busy summer recruitment spree. But he has failed to live up to expectations at the Premier League new boys.

The 29-year-old has yet to have the desired impact in Steve Cooper’s side, failing to score or provide an assist this season from 11 appearances.

Lingard is the highest earner in the Nottingham Forest squad on over £100k a week and Forest are ready to cut their losses on the England international in January.

Lingard only signed a one-year deal with Forest upon his arrival in the summer, but the club are willing to let him leave earlier as he does not figure in their long-term plans.

Of course, Cooper recently signed a long-term contract extension to continue as Forest manager. Lingard might not be with him for much of that time, though.

It remains to be seen who else might show an interest in the attacking midfielder, who will turn 30 in December.

However, he might have to start looking around at his options sooner rather than later. The former West Ham loanee needs to get his career back on track.

It looked as if his six-month stint at the London Stadium in 2021 was bringing out his best again. Since he returned to Manchester United that summer, though, things have not progressed as he would have liked.

Lingard was a fringe player in his final season at Old Trafford, before making his move to Forest over the summer.

Jesse Lingard in need of another career revival

He was briefly back in the England picture in 2021, but has faded from the international conversation now. It looks as if his club future is coming into more immediate question again.

Of the nine Premier League games Lingard has started for Forest, they have won only two. That said, they are their only two wins in the top flight this season.

Forest are currently bottom of the table after 13 games, although they are just three points from safety.

There is now a chance that Lingard might not be with them for the entire duration of their relegation battle.

Before the World Cup break, Forest have fixtures against Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, all at home. They will then conclude 2022 with a trip back to Lingard’s old home ground to face Manchester United on December 27.
