Nottingham Forest are in pole position over a deal for Neco Williams and hope to agree a deal with Liverpool for the right-back, a report has claimed.
Forest are looking to bolster this summer following their promotion from the Championship. They are back in the Premier League for the first time since 1999 – and want to make sure they stay there.
Adding goals was a key priority and former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi has arrived at the City Ground in that regard.
However, attacking influence from the right is also important for Steve Cooper’s Forest. Middlesbrough loanee Djed Spence impressed up and down the right flank last term, but Tottenham are the leading contenders to snap him up.
As such, Giulian Biancone has signed as the first of two targeted right-back additions for Forest this summer.
Indeed, they are also going after Liverpool’s Wales international Williams. Fulham, who enjoyed his services on loan last term as they also won promotion, similarly wanted to sign him. They are now going after Wolfsburg’s Kevin Mbabu instead.
90min therefore reports that Forest feel ‘confident’ of winning the race for Williams.
The report adds that the Midlands club will furthermore beat Crystal Palace and Brentford to the 21-year-old.
Previous reports revealed that Forest had a first competitive offer for Williams rejected by Liverpool. It remains unclear what that bid amounted to.
However, 90min claims that Liverpool want £15million for Williams. Forest subsequently feel confident of sealing his signing in the coming weeks.
The 21-cap Wales star is Forest’s top target, but they also reportedly considered Manchester City’s Issa Kabore.
Neco Williams needs move away
Williams has approached a career crossroads this summer after his impressive spell at Fulham last year.
He moved to Craven Cottage in January and helped finish off their promotion push.
And while Williams has not yet proved himself at Premier League level, he is ready for the step up.
He has played 13 times in the top flight for Liverpool, including six times in the 2019/20 season as Liverpool closed in on the Premier League title.
As well as his domestic form, Williams is now a senior Wales international and needs regular game time ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
He is unlikely to get that at Anfield. Not only is Trent Alexander-Arnold hard to shift, but Liverpool have added Calvin Rasmsay as his new understudy this summer.
