An important January transfer window is fast approaching for Nottingham Forest.

The Reds have made a fine start to the season as they aim to kick on in the Premier League this term. It means the business they do in the new year will carry added weight given they already have some solid foundations in place.

There is still some way to go before clubs can begin doing deals again, but that has not stopped plenty of Forest speculation from doing the rounds. Below, NottinghamshireLive assesses some of the latest rumours.

Kelleher competition

The Reds are still being credited with an interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher after being rebuffed in their attempt to land him in the summer. However, it seems they face some stiff competition for his signature.

According to The Sun, Forest are among the clubs who “lead the way” for the 25-year-old. But they add Chelsea are now “plotting” a summer swoop for him, while Italian heavyweights Juventus and Napoli are keeping tabs on him.

Where the Reds might hold an advantage over the Blues is that Liverpool are apparently “not keen” to strengthen a potential title rival. Additionally, Kelleher is said to prefer to remain in the Premier League rather than head abroad - a blow to his European admirers.

However, The Sun point out that if Chelsea match Liverpool’s £35 million valuation of the Republic of Ireland international they will have “little choice” but to see him depart for Stamford Bridge. That is something Forest failed to do in the summer, when an offer reportedly made up of £7m plus Matt Turner, was turned down.

NottinghamshireLive says: The Reds have a key call to make over their goalkeeper situation in January. At present, as a result of missing out on Kelleher (and other targets) in the summer they have only two senior stoppers on the books rather than the usual three.

Do they stick with what they have for the remainder of the season or do they once again turn to the market in the new year? The form of Matz Sels means there shouldn’t be any great rush for a reshuffle between the posts, but the club will be wary of being short in that department should either the Belgian or back-up Carlos Miguel suffer an injury.

Forest have tried for Kelleher twice before, having also seen a £15m bid rejected last January. If they do try to make it third time lucky, there is no doubt about the Liverpool man’s quality.

All the signs point to Kelleher leaving Merseyside at some point next year given he has been clear about his desire for regular game time. Regardless of his list of potential suitors growing, the Reds would still be better off waiting until the summer to strengthen their goalkeeper ranks. Give Sels a full season as No.1 and then see how the land lies.

Striker search

As January looms, Forest continue to be linked with plenty of strikers. And the latest name doing the rounds is Besiktas’ Semih Kilicsoy.

According to Turkish publication Star, the Reds are eyeing up the 19-year-old. Premier League rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa are also said to be keen, along with Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and PSG.

The report claims there is a “high possibility” the teenager’s time in Turkey is coming to an end. Besiktas are said to be “expecting” to bank a fee of €25m (£20.7m) by overseeing his sale.

NottinghamshireLive says: Forest need to strengthen their attacking resources - few would argue otherwise. Taiwo Awoniyi can still have a role to play but is yet to get going this season, and it is a big ask for Chris Wood to shoulder the goalscoring burden all the way through to May.

It could be argued that there is better value to be had by waiting until the end of the campaign to spend big on a forward. The Reds refused to spend for the sake of it or pay over the odds this summer, and it would come as no surprise were a similar approach taken in January.

With a price tag of more than £20m, Kilicsoy would represent a significant outlay. And quite a risk, too, given he is 19 and has no Premier League experience. His stats so far this season are also not exactly eye-catching, with one goal from 16 games.

Turkish media reports can often come with a pinch of salt. Forest need to spend wisely when it comes to adding a striker, and when that happens they would surely be better off splashing the cash on a proven goalscorer - even if they have demonstrated an eye for recruiting promising young talent.
