Nottingham Forest vs West Ham LIVE!

West Ham have opened the new Premier League campaign with successive losses after a frustrating afternoon in the East Midlands. David Moyes’ side, beaten by champions Manchester City on opening weekend, saw Declan Rice’s penalty saved and Said Benrahma’s effort ruled out by VAR on a day to forget, while Kurt Zouma also had a header cleared off the line as they chased the game late on.

But the day belongs to Forest, whose brilliant fans created a stunning atmosphere as the rocking City Ground hosted top-flight football for the first time since 1999. Their first victory back at this level since ending a 23-year exile via the Championship play-offs was secured on the stroke of half-time, when Taiwo Awoniyi - one of 14 summer signings and counting made by Steve Cooper so far in this window - bundled home a loose ball after Jesse Lingard’s scuffed shot was deflected into his path.

Some away fans threw fake money in Lingard’s direction to show their ire at him snubbing a summer return to east London, but ultimately it was the England midfielder who had the last laugh. Follow Nottingham Forest vs West Ham reaction with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below, featuring expert analysis from Simon Collings at the City Ground!

Declan Rice saw a second-half penalty saved at Nottingham Forest as West Ham slumped to a second successive defeat to begin the new Premier League season.

The Hammers captain’s tame spot-kick was easily repelled by England colleague Dean Henderson after Scott McKenna had blocked Tomas Soucek’s goal-bound strike with his arm in a fast and furious affair at a raucous City Ground on Sunday.

Said Benrahma had a goal ruled out for a barge by Michail Antonio on the unsuspecting Orel Mangala in the first half, while the Algerian international and Pablo Fornals also both struck the woodwork on a day of huge frustration for David Moyes’ side - beaten by reigning champions Manchester City on opening weekend - in the searing East Midlands sunshine.

A momentous and historic day for Forest. Frustration for West Ham, though. A goal ruled out by VAR, missed a penalty, hit the bar twice and one cleared off the line - but they leave the City Ground with nothing.

Nottingham Forest 1-0 West Ham

16:00 , George Flood

“Forest are back, Forest are back” is the cry from the jubilant home fans.

Steve Cooper ushers away the Sky cameras after an order for a re-taken free-kick is mistaken for the final whistle.

15:56 , George Flood

95 mins: It’s just not happening for West Ham.

Scamacca has the ball in the box, but the danger is quickly averted.

Forest fans begging for that final whistle.

15:53 , George Flood

93 mins: More time off the clock as Williams receives an accidental blow to a sensitive area while tussling with Benrahma.

Forest are almost there!

15:51 , George Flood

90 mins: Another corner won by West Ham, but it’s hooked well wide by Soucek after more dogged defending by Toffolo.

SEVEN minutes of added time have been signalled. Still plenty of time left for West Ham to find that equaliser.

15:50 , George Flood

88 mins: If anything, Forest look more likely to finish this off late on.

Fabianski has to stretch to ensure a dangerous low cross doesn’t fizz in at the back post.

15:46 , George Flood

85 mins: It’s a West Ham debut for new £17.5m attacker Maxwel Cornet as we approach the final five minutes at the City Ground.

Bowen goes off. Can the Ivorian make an immediate impact? Moyes’s men need it.

15:44 , George Flood

82 mins: Fantastic defending from Williams to clear Zouma’s header from a corner off the line!

Zouma goes down under pressure from Toffolo at the next corner, but there’s no penalty given.

15:43 , George Flood

80 mins: Into the final 10 minutes in the East Midlands.

West Ham continue to press, but it’s all a bit sluggish and hesistant going forward.

You get the feeling this isn’t going to be their day.

15:40 , George Flood

77 mins: There’s another delay as Niakhate receives further treatment. He’s not going to be able to continue.

Steve Cook has been warming up and now enters the fray, having only just got back from injury himself.

Under 15 minutes left for City to negotiate at the City Ground. Can they hang on for a famous first Premier League win for 23 years?

15:37 , George Flood

74 mins: Forest have replaced impressive goalscorer Awoniyi with Sam Surridge with time ticking away.

Scamacca looks to be in for West Ham, but it’s a great recovery from Niakhate, who looks to have hurt his hamstring in the process.

15:32 , George Flood

70 mins: A chance for a breather during the second-half drinks break.

West Ham have 20 minutes to save this and avoid starting the new Premier League season with back-to-back defeats.

15:31 , George Flood

68 mins: Antonio works diligently to drift horizontally inside the Forest box and try to create the space for a shot, but McKenna watches him like a hawk and makes an excellent block.

Scamacca now finally replaces Antonio. Lanzini on for Fornals.

15:28 , George Flood

66 mins: That missed West Ham penalty is swiftly followed by another decent Forest chance, with the visitors again failing to deal with a cross into the box.

Niakhate isn’t quite expecting the ball to fall his way I don’t think and it bounces off him to safety.

This game is back to being played at 100 miles per hour. End-to-end, open stuff. Delightful!

PENALTY MISSED

15:26 , George Flood

64 mins: That’s a really disappointing penalty from Rice, who tries to go low to Henderson’s right but the England ‘keeper guesses correctly and makes a straightforward stop.

Huge opportunity missed for West Ham. Moyes will be fuming.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

PENALTY TO WEST HAM

15:24 , George Flood

63 mins: That was instinctive but clearly handball from McKenna, who receives a yellow card with the spot-kick now given after referee Jones goes over to check the pitchside monitor.

Only Henderson’s position has likely saved him from a red there.

15:23 , George Flood

62 mins: West Ham have the bit between their teeth again now and an incisive move ends with a sweeping goal-bound shot from Soucek that is blocked by McKenna, possibly with his arm!

He could be in trouble here. Nothing given at first, but there will be a VAR check.

15:22 , George Flood

60 mins: Woodwork! Benrahma’s free-kick is smashed against the crossbar after a foolish foul by Mangala.

Henderson jumps to safely claim the loose ball.

So unlucky for the Algerian, who of course had a strike ruled out before half-time.

15:20 , George Flood

57 mins: Rather than sap their energy and confidence, Johnson’s goal being ruled out seems to have served to galvanise Forest, who are now getting forward again with menace and verve, igniting this passionate home crowd once more.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

15:19 , George Flood

Scamacca is coming on for West Ham. Antonio has had a tough old time against Forest’s back three, so the added size will help.

Lanzini also imminent.

NO GOAL

15:15 , George Flood

54 mins: As expected, Johnson’s effort is quickly chalked off.

As you were, 1-0. Both sides have now seen goals ruled out.

15:15 , George Flood

53 mins: Despite West Ham’s dominance, Forest look to have doubled their lead early in the second period as Johnson calmly dinks the ball over Fabianski after being played through by Mangala.

However, there was more than a suspicion of offside there.

The goal is given at first, but this will be disallowed after a VAR check.

15:13 , George Flood

52 mins: Can Forest weather this storm? Bowen does well to earn another corner, but again they are able to clear the danger and look to launch a counter-attack.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

15:12 , George Flood

Much better from West Ham since the break. Playing with purpose and at speed.

15:11 , George Flood

48 mins: West Ham are all over Forest like a heat rash just at the moment.

Forest have to deal with a corner before O’Brien has to react quickly to turn away an enticing cross intended for Antonio.

The hosts affording way too much space in West Ham’s right channel on that occasion.

15:07 , George Flood

45 mins: Back underway and what a start to the second half from West Ham!

Fornals’ excellent strike from 25 yards hits the underside of the crossbar and bounces down, with Soucek expected to head home the rebound.

However, it’s a great save from Henderson to keep this at 1-0.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

14:59 , George Flood

Good game this, being played at a decent tempo. Forest bright and lively, with Awoniyi a handful and scoring.

West Ham had held firm until then and have showed glimpses going forward, with Benrahma dangerous.

Half-time

14:54 , George Flood

Nottingham Forest 1-0 West Ham

A hectic end to that first half!

Forest lead at the break.

GOAL! Nottingham Forest 1-0 West Ham | Taiwo Awoniyi 48'

14:49 , George Flood

48 mins: The City Ground erupts!

Toffolo does brilliantly to weave his way into the box and beyond the West Ham defence, providing a cutback for Lingard.

His shot is scuffed, but it’s accidentally prodded by Johnson into the path of Awoniyi, who bundles home from close range on his first start.

Forest’s first Premier League goal for 23 years. They have lift off!

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

14:49 , George Flood

45 mins: Three minutes of added time signalled at the end of this first half.

14:48 , George Flood

44 mins: Fabianski is equal to Williams’ ambitious drive as Forest now push for an opener before the break.

NO GOAL

14:47 , George Flood

43 mins: The VAR advises referee Robert Jones to go and check the pitchside monitor.

We know what that usually means, and the goal is duly ruled out.

Antonio argues his case and it did look accidental, but it remains goalless.

14:45 , George Flood

42 mins: West Ham have the ball in the back of the net before half-time, Benrahma slotting easily beyond Henderson after being played in by Rice following an Irons counter.

However, Forest clearly feel that Antonio barged into Mangala before that pass was played, stopping him from closing down Rice.

The goal is initially given, but this will be checked and possibly chalked off.

14:43 , George Flood

41 mins: Chance for Forest!

A dangerous cross from the left is headed on deftly by Johnson, with Williams striving to provide the finish at the back post under pressure from Cresswell.

But Fabianski gets his body in the way and makes the save.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

14:42 , George Flood

Antonio is getting more and more frustrated with the referee. The West Ham striker is tussling like mad with the Forest centre-backs to hold the ball, but isn’t getting any free-kicks for his work.

14:41 , George Flood

38 mins: A couple of half-chances for West Ham in the last couple of minutes.

First Benrahma caused Forest skipper Worrall all sorts of problems as he got to the byline and rather fired a cross straight at Bowen, who didn’t have time to adjust. The ball rather hit him and was claimed by Henderson.

Then Benrahma’s blocked shot fell into the path of Antonio, who tried to hook the ball around the corner and goalbounds, but another easy save for the Manchester United loanee.

14:40 , George Flood

36 mins: The pace and tempo in this previously furious encounter has dropped noticeably in the last few minutes, which is to be expected in these boiling conditions.

Can either side grab the initiative before the interval?

14:36 , George Flood

33 mins: Awoniyi strays just offside twice in a matter of minutes as he tries to beat that West Ham backline.

The first time he was put clean through by Lingard after an incisive Forest break, but Fabianski did well to quickly close the space and thwart the danger.

14:34 , George Flood

30 mins: A moment of panic for Forest as Soucek crashes after Antonio’s dinked pass into the box, with Henderson coming out and colliding with O’Brien.

It looks like danger, but the whistle goes for a pressure-relieving free-kick against the West Ham midfielder.

14:32 , George Flood

27 mins: A poor strike from Coufal ends West Ham’s latest foray forward.

Before that, Lingard, with his every touch being booed by the away end, combined well with Johnson, whose curled effort was comfortably held by Fabianski.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

14:30 , George Flood

The drinks break brings an end to a pulsating opening 25 minutes or so. Forest full of drive and intent, but West Ham have held firm and look decent on the counter.

 (PA)
(PA)

14:28 , George Flood

25 mins: Time for the drinks break in a first half that is now an even contest after Forest’s fast start.

Still goalless at the City Ground.

14:28 , George Flood

22 mins: West Ham need more goals from Soucek this season as he’s such a threat in the air when he gets into the box.

Benrahma rolls the ball back for Cresswell, who picks out the Czech with a decent delivery.

However, Soucek is already in the area rather than making a late dash and struggles to generate the necessary power on his header, leading to a comfortable enough save for Henderson.

14:23 , George Flood

18 mins: This first 20 minutes has rattled along at a cracking pace.

A dangerous Cresswell cross is repelled at one end before Johnson regains possession for Forest and feeds Lingard, with Awoniyi inches away from connecting with his low drive that flashes menacingly across Fabianski’s penalty area.

14:21 , George Flood

These are the fake banknotes being chucked at Lingard from the away end, by the way...

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

14:19 , George Flood

14 mins: Better from West Ham as Benrahma creates the space for a curled strike that is kept out by Henderson at full stretch, with Toffolo then crucially touching the ball to safety under huge pressure from Soucek.

A goal-saving intervention from the former Huddersfield man.

14:16 , George Flood

11 mins: It’s all Forest at the moment, with everything coming down their right-hand side.

Williams aims another peach of a cross into the West Ham box, with Awoniyi expertly finding the space between the centre-backs but powering his header off target.

The Hammers have to stop that ammunition from out wide and get Zouma and Johnson on the same page while they are at it.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

14:14 , George Flood

West Ham fans couldn’t wait for Jesse Lingard to take a corner and instead have chucked some fake pound notes at Neco Williams.

14:14 , George Flood

9 mins: Rice has looked well off the pace in these opening exchanges and he’s caught on the wrong side again as Forest counter at pace, bringing down Lingard this time and receiving the game’s first caution for his troubles.

Bowen is guilty of failing to clear his lines with Forest aiming dangerous balls into the box from the right flank, with a couple of sights at goal for Niakhate.

Fabianski tips over his first header from close range at the back post.

14:11 , George Flood

7 mins: West Ham now go close with a smart free-kick from Cresswell, who just bends a strike wide after Antonio is brought down by O’Brien.

A frenetic pace to these early stages.

14:09 , George Flood

5 mins: A foolish challenge on Awoniyi by Rice offers Forest a free-kick in a dangerous position.

However, it’s lashed high over the crossbar by Neco Williams.

West Ham need to take the sting out of this atmosphere, and quickly.

14:06 , George Flood

3 mins: A really lively start from Forest, which is only leading to more noise in the stands.

They are playing at an electric tempo despite the searing heat, disrupting West Ham all over the pitch and not wasting time in getting forward.

They earn a quick corner, which West Ham are able to clear.

KICK-OFF

14:03 , George Flood

The atmosphere at the City Ground has now ratcheted up to spine-tingling as referee Robert Jones blows his whistle for kick-off in Nottingham Forest’s first home Premier League match since 1999.

Can they emerge victorious, or will West Ham spoil the party?

Let’s find out...

13:59 , George Flood

Great noise as the players emerge from the tunnel at a sun-soaked City Ground!

Forest in their classic red home shirts with no sponsor this afternoon, while West Ham are donning their black away strips.

Only three of this Forest XI started the Championship play-off final against Huddersfield at Wembley in May.

Unsurprisingly given Forest fans have waited 23 years for this, the City Ground is rocking. Incredible atmosphere.

Antonio won’t celebrate goal against Forest

13:54 , George Flood

Jesse Lingard is not the only player going up against his former club today.

Michail Antonio previously starred for Forest before joining West Ham in 2015 and says he won’t celebrate if he scores this afternoon.

“No, I’d never do that,” he told Sky Sports.

“I have too much respect the club, I have too much respect for the fans to do that.

“Obviously I’m going to go out there and do my job but I’d never celebrate because the time I had there, I really loved it and Forest is close to my heart.”

Lingard hits out at ‘nonsense’ criticism over Forest move

13:44 , George Flood

Ahead of what will be a tough reception from the travelling fans today, Jesse Lingard has dismissed what he views as “nonsense” narratives concerning his move to Nottingham Forest.

“I could have gone abroad for a lot, a lot, a lot more money, like life-changing money,” he told Sky Sports.

“So for me, it’s just nonsense really. I don’t really like to read into that stuff really, it was my decision.

“The owners were very strong in their approach to bring me here. They flew me to London, they went overboard to do what they could to bring me here.”

Colback missing through illness for Forest

13:33 , George Flood

Forest boss Steve Cooper has just revealed before kick-off that it is illness that rules out Jack Colback this afternoon.

Full Forest debuts for Mangala and Awoniyi

13:21 , George Flood

Orel Mangala and Taiwo Awoniyi do indeed come in for their full Forest debuts today, having both come off the bench in the 2-0 defeat by Newcastle on Tyneside.

Sam Surridge drops to the bench, with Jack Colback not in the matchday squad after starting at St James’ Park.

Veteran defender Steve Cook is deemed fit enough for a place among the substitutes, meanwhile.

Scott McKenna does retain his starting berth despite that niggle in training.

Moyes makes one change as Benrahma replaces Lanzini

13:13 , George Flood

So David Moyes makes only one change to the West Ham side beaten 2-0 by Manchester City on opening weekend, with Said Benrahma replacing Manuel Lanzini, who drops to the bench.

Gianlucca Scamacca and Maxwel Cornet are both named as substitutes, along with fellow new recruit Flynn Downes.

West Ham’s lack of squad depth is shown by the fact that Moyes has named two goalkeepers among his replacements in Alphonse Areola and Darren Randolph.

Lukasz Fabianski is fit to start between the posts today, while Michail Antonio has shaken off a knock to lead the line as usual.

Great scenes inside and around the sunny City Ground on what should be a really memorable day for Forest fans, regardless of the final scoreline (although they will no doubt be anxious for a victory).

What a day for Forest’s first home Premier League fixture since May 16, 1999, when Chris Bart-Williams scored the only goal of the game for Ron Atkinson’s struggling side in a 1-0 win over East Midlands rivals Leicester.

The Tricky Trees finished rock bottom that season and have not been back to the top-flight since, even spending a three-year stint in the third tier between 2005-08.

Lingard set for uncomfortable Hammers reunion

12:32 , George Flood

The headline signing of that group is undoubtedly Jesse Lingard, who sprung a huge shock after deciding to join Forest on a lucrative one-year contract after leaving Manchester UInited earlier this summer.

In the process he snubbed a permanent return to West Ham, for whom he played a starring role on loan a couple of seasons ago.

David Moyes has admitted his surprise at Lingard’s decision, insisting that the Hammers “pushed the boat out” to try and strike a deal.

The England midfielder is set for a rough reception from the travelling fans this afternoon, many of whom are apparently set to wave Monopoly banknotes in his direction to display their ire at what they obviously feel was purely a financially motivated choice.

A full list of Forest’s summer signings can be found below, in case anyone has understandably lost count at this point...

Forest continue drastic transfer overhaul

12:15 , George Flood

The free transfer of Cheikhou Kouyate and £20m deal for Emmanuel Dennis takes Forest up to a staggering 14 new arrivals and counting since promotion at a cost of just under £110m - and they are from done by the sounds of things.

The Championship play-off winners are also set to sign Brighton striker Neal Maupay in a £15m deal and are reportedly close to getting Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and also chasing Djibril Sow at Eintracht Frankfurt as well as the likes of Remo Freuler, James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Will this be a case of too much change, too quickly for Steve Cooper’s side, or is such drastic surgery required to give them a fighting chance of staying up this season?

Time will tell.

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings has arrived at the City Ground...

11:57 , George Flood

It’s set to be another scorching day in the East Midlands as this latest summer heatwave continues, with temperatures currently around 33 degrees and rising.

As in every other match this weekend, drinks breaks will be enforced in each half to allow the players to take on plenty of fluids.

Nottingham Forest vs West Ham prediction

11:47 , George Flood

The City Ground factor cannot be overlooked here but Steve Cooper is still trying to knit his team together amid such a busy summer window and Forest offered little in the way of quality at Newcastle.

For that reason, a tight away victory seems like a reasonable prediction.

West Ham to win, 2-1.

West Ham early team news

11:46 , George Flood

David Moyes could hand full debuts to Gianluca Scamacca and Maxwel Cornet this afternoon, with the former having been restricted to a second-half cameo against Manchester City and the latter not signed from Burnley in time.

Michail Antonio appears to have shaken off an issue suffered in training, though Lukasz Fabianski and Craig Dawson are still doubts. Alphonse Areola will continue to deputise in goal if Fabianski remains sidelined.

£28m defender Nayef Aguerd is still out after undergoing ankle surgery last month, while Angelo Ogbonna remains on the comeback trail after a long-term ACL injury.

That means Moyes is likely to have to turn to full-back Ben Johnson as a centre-half once again today, alongside Kurt Zouma.

Nottingham Forest early team news

11:41 , George Flood

Forest could hand further full debuts to two of their glut of new signings this afternoon in Orel Mangala and Taiwo Awoniyi, who both came off the bench in the 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park on opening weekend.

However, Omar Richards, Ryan Yates and Steve Cook are still sidelined and influential defender Scott McKenna is doubtful with a knock sustained in training this week.

Ex-West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate and fellow new recruit Emmanuel Dennis are now officially Forest players, though did not sign in time to play today.

Jesse Lingard will line up against the club for whom he previously starred on loan and surprisingly rejected in favour of a switch to the City Ground this summer.
