The court has made the final ruling on the Novak Djokovic visa debacle, but his fierce rival Rafael Nadal admitted before the decision that “the situation has gone too far”.

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia on Sunday unanimously upheld Immigration Minister Alex Hawke’s decision to use his personal powers to cancel Djokovic’s visa for a second time.

Hawke’s decision was based on the notion the world No 1’s presence in the country could stoke anti-vaccination sentiment, making him a danger to public health, as well as civil unrest.

Djokovic’s legal team have confirmed they won’t challenge the latest ruling, meaning the Serbian won’t defend his Australian Open title.

The drama surrounding the 20-time Grand Slam winner’s visa application has taken the spotlight off the season-opening Grand Slam, much to Spaniard Nadal’s frustration.

“The Australian Open will be a great Australian Open with or without him,” Nadal said.

“I think the situation has gone too far. Honestly I’m a little bit tired of the situation because I just believe that it’s important to talk about our sport, about tennis.

He added: “As a person, of course, and as an athlete, without a doubt.

“I really respect him, even if I don’t agree with a lot of the things that he did the last couple of weeks.”
