In an era of player power and sky high salaries, you do sometimes wonder why these new arrivals don’t demand a clause be inserted when signing their contracts.

“I, the below-signed, will not be forced to do anything which even slightly represents an initiation song.

“If I am, and it goes on social media, I will be allowed to eat chips all the time and have my birthday off.”

On Thursday night, it was the Liverpool new boy’s time to show off their skills.

Sadly for them and for us, it was with a mic and not with a football.

It took a while. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been busy in the transfer market during the close season.

Liverpool have added Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson to their ranks – and not even last January’ window signs dodged it.

Centre-back and record signing Virgil Van Dijk had to belt one out – and of course it was all captured on camera.

But as usually happens, somebody put their foot in it.

Allison, the £65m purchase from Roma, picked Mancunian anthem ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ by Oasis – not a popular song on the Kop!

Dutchman van Dijk went for a safer bet – 1998 R&B hit ‘So Into You’ by Tamia.

Former Stoke man Shaqiri says reggae is popular in Switzerland, so he belted out Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds.

There were cringing players all around but poor Fabinho just couldn’t do it – clapping along to his song instead of actually singing.

Perhaps it was for the best.
