Darwin Nunez is desperate to move to Liverpool this summer and would ‘sign tomorrow’, with the Reds prepared to offer Benfica players in exchange for the striker.
A report on Thursday claimed ‘a dialogue is open’ between Liverpool and the Portuguese side over a structured deal for Nunez.
It could see Liverpool pay between £83-£85m through a £65m down payment followed by a series of bonuses.
It’s claimed Jurgen Klopp – who was effusive in his praise of the Uruguayan after he scored home and away against his side in the Champions League last term – has made the forward his number one target.
And the feeling is said to be mutual, with Nunez reportedly telling Benfica that he ‘only wants a move to Anfield’.
The Portuguese side want €100m for their prize asset, but Liverpool have already made it clear that they will not pay that figure up front.
But they are open to a deal with bonus related add-ons which could eventually get close that mark.
Portuguese outlet CMTV (via Sport Witness), backs up those claims that a proposal is already on the table.
The report quotes pundit Nuno Dias as saying: “I have the information that Benfica already have the bid. The bid is already at Luz, it’s indeed of 80m plus 20m, and the player would’ve already said he’d sign it tomorrow (if given the chance).”
It’s also claimed that ‘the Reds could include players in the offer to convince Benfica to accept it’.
A number of Liverpool players could be made available to Benfica in a swap deal, with Takumi Minamino, Neco Williams and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain among those thought to be on a list of many options.
Liverpool were keen to avoid a bidding war and they appear to have done just that with Nunez now set to ignore interest from other interested parties, including Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Newcastle, ramping up the pressure on Benfica to accept the terms from Klopp’s side.
