Nuno provides huge Danilo injury update as Nottingham Forest await return
Nottingham Forest midfielder Danilo is “close” to making his return from injury.
The Brazilian suffered a broken ankle on the opening day of the season and has been sidelined since. However, Reds head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed positive progress is being made in his recovery.
Forest will still want to tread extremely carefully with Danilo and will not rush him back into action. But he is clearly itching to get out on the pitch again as he has invested a great deal of commitment into his rehabilitation.
"He's close to returning. Now we need to give him time to recover from the injury itself and then increase his fitness levels so he can return. But the process is going well,” Nuno told ESPN Brazil.
“We need to be patient, understand that it's a traumatic injury that will require some more time on the field. A huge loss, it was a very tough time to lose Danilo in the first game. But he's positive, he's a very special kid.
“He had the opportunity to be in Brazil (as part of his recovery). He works 14 hours a day on his recovery, he doesn't leave anything aside in his recovery and that's a big advantage.”
The new season was just eight minutes old when Danilo suffered the injury. He landed awkwardly after challenging for the ball in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
He underwent surgery soon afterwards and had to wear a knee-length boot for a time. Forest have been expecting the 23-year-old and fellow long-term absentee Ibrahim Sangare to return to training around Christmas time.
However, in an encouraging sign, Danilo uploaded a picture to Instagram this week showing him in training gear and on the grass with his boots on. It might still be some time before he fully joins in with his teammates and makes his return to Premier League action as he will need to build up his fitness first.
