Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed he only discovered Harry Kane was staying at Tottenham on Wednesday morning, shortly before the England captain announced the news.

Kane put the summer’s biggest transfer saga to bed by confirming he would be staying at Spurs “this summer”, insisting he was “100 per cent focussed” on helping the club achieve success.

The 28-year-old had wanted to join Manchester City but accepted he would not be sold after Spurs rejected one bid worth around £100million from the Premier League champions, and made it clear their talisman was not for sale.

The England captain held talks with Fabio Paratici, the club’s managing director, before announcing the news, although Nuno admitted he was not informed of Kane’s decision until Wednesday morning.

“I knew when Harry told me – this morning,” Nuno said ahead of Thursday’s Europa Conference League play-off second leg against Pacos de Ferreira.

“It’s great news, fantastic news.

“He’s much better [fitness-wise]. Harry joined us for 20 mins in the previous game. He did fantastically well. He’s progressed, he’s improving, it’s a day-by-day process and he’s an option for tomorrow.”

Kane is Spurs’ second-top scorer of all-time with 221 goals, just 45 shy of the legendary Jimmy Greaves, and his decision to stay put has increased his chances of hauling in the World Cup winner.

“I am delighted that he will be with us,” continued Nuno. “I think all the players individually must have targets and records to break but all inside of the team.

“I don’t see any kind of players being selfish to consider individual situations. It is inside the group and team. We have to succeed and compete and all the players are needed.”

Nuno refused to say whether Kane would make his first League start of the season in Sunday’s match against Watford after revealing he was in contention for the second leg against the Portuguese side, with Spurs trailing 1-0.

“Still have to decide,” he added. “First we play the game of tomorrow. Harry is an option for tomorrow. Then we decide for the next one.”
