Nuno Tavares hopes to draw from the experiences of both Matteo Guendouzi and William Saliba during his loan spell with Marseille.

Following the signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mikel Arteta allowed the 22-year-old to join the French club on loan for the season, although the deal is not believed to have included an option to buy.

A summer signing from Benfica last year, the Portugal U21 international endured a difficult maiden campaign in north London and Zinchenko’s arrival offers Arteta a much more experienced option to compete with Kieran Tierney at left-back.

Having signed a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium in 2021, however, there remains hope for Tavares to make something of his Arsenal career.

Indeed, Saliba played his way into an impressive French international set-up after his excellent form at the Stade Velodrome, winning Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Year last season.

Now, the defender is expected to a player major role as Arsenal make another attempt to qualify for the Champions League.

Guendouzi, meanwhile, joined Marseille on loan in 2021 and has since made that a permanent arrangement after emerging as one of the club’s leading players.

Speaking during his first interview with the French club, Tavares was asked about the players he looks to as a source of inspiration.

“I follow Joao Cancelo obviously,” he told the club’s in-house media channel.

“And for a reference, Matteo and Saliba. I saw the success they had here, so I want to follow those steps as much as I can.”
