Arsenal will have to assess their plans with Nuno Tavares after the left-back became a target for Serie A side Atalanta, according to reports.

Tavares joined Arsenal last summer and initially made a decent impression as a backup to Kieran Tierney. However, over the course of the season, some errors began to creep into his game.

His future is now in the balance just 12 months on after his arrival at the Emirates Stadium. Tavares could make way for someone else to provide more reliable competition for Tierney.

A recent report suggested Arsenal were torn between two options for the Portugal under-21 international. On one hand, they could loan him out to boost his confidence again. On the other, they could keep him and give him more chances now they are back in Europe.

Now, their dilemma could be put to the test. According to L’Eco di Bergamo, Tavares has become a target for Atalanta – although it is not yet clear whether they want him on loan or a permanent basis.

Atalanta sold flying wing-back Robin Gosens to Inter Milan during the January transfer window. They have opted to wait before finding a replacement on the left-hand side.

It now appears that Tavares is on their radar. At the age of 22, he would fit within their long-lasting policy of developing young players.

However, after they finished eighth in the 2021-22 Serie A, he would miss out on European football if he was to switch Arsenal for Atalanta.

His departure could allow Arsenal to further their interest in versatile Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey. In addition, they have been linked with Manchester City utility man Oleksandr Zinchenko. Although, they may prefer to use him as a midfielder.

Arsenal should only loan Nuno Tavares out

While some concerns emerged about Tavares towards the end of last season, there were other occasions when he looked like a player of potential.

Still only 22, Arsenal should not make any hasty decisions about his future. His contract is due to run until 2025. As such, there is no urgent need to sell if they do not believe in him.

But perhaps a loan move – especially to a side like Atalanta, whose wing-backs get forward a lot – would be beneficial for the former Benfica youngster.

If it goes well, Arsenal could then either take their chance to cash in, or reintegrate the wide man.

But it would be too soon to sell him at this stage, unless they can guarantee someone better coming in.
