Liverpool have confirmed Steven Gerrard will become the manager of their Under-18 side ahead of the new season as he continues his advancement in coaching.
The 36-year-old, who retired from playing last November before embarking on the next phase of his career with the club’s Academy in February, will begin his duties this summer.
The Reds legend was initially tasked with a floating role at Kirkby, but having impressed with his attitude and aptitude, he’ll succeed Neil Critchley in the post, who will take charge of the Under-23s.
"I have really enjoyed my time at the Academy so far and feel I have learnt a lot from the coaching staff here already,” Gerrard said.
“After speaking to Alex [Inglethorpe], we feel as though it is time for me to step up and manage my own team.
"Neil has done a fantastic job with the U18s, so I hope I can continue where he left off, encouraging and nurturing players into the U23s and eventually the first-team setup."
On the decision to give Gerrard the responsibility of overseeing a team, Academy director Inglethorpe added: "Steven has brought invaluable experience and knowledge to us since joining us, passing on some fantastic advice and guidance to our younger players.
“We both feel now is the perfect time for him to take the next step in his coaching career and manage his own team.
"The U18 players can undoubtedly only learn from having someone like Steven in charge and we have no doubt that he will prove to be a huge success in the position.”
Critchley’s promotion to U23s manager follows a near four-year stint as boss of the Under-18s, during which time the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn and Ovie Ejaria have progressed from that level to the first-team.
"This is also a fantastic opportunity for Neil to step up too and manage the U23s team,” Inglethorpe said.
“He has done a brilliant job with the U18s since joining us in 2013 and I am sure he will continue to help with the progression of players into the first team."
Mike Garrity, currently managing the U23s, will form part of Critchley’s backroom team.
