Former England captain Nasser Hussain was effusive in praise for Ollie Robinson after the pacer delivered a match-winning five-wicket haul at Headingley against India, following up from his maiden fifer at Trent Bridge.
He returned with 2/16 in India’s first innings as well, where he took over from James Anderson’s three-wicket spree to pin India for 78 all out, earning the Man of the Match award.
Following his suspension in the light of his derogatory historic tweets emergence in June, when he made his Test debut, Robinson came back strongly in the series against India – he is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series with 16 wickets, including two that of Virat Kohli, at an average of 19.06.
Nasser Hussain said the Kent seamer had looked Test match ready since his debut, before which he over 250 wickets in first-class cricket at an average close to 20.
“It was an outstanding bowling performance from England. Twice in the game as well; 78 all out in the first innings and 63 for 8 today. Robinson, in particular, since he has come in this side, he has just looked ready for Test match cricket,” Nasser Hussain said after the Leeds Test.
He will be a real asset Down Under: Nasser Hussain
Although Robinson doesn’t have extra pace, his other attributes – accuracy and consistency in line and length, extra bounce, longevity – makes him a potent threat in most conditions. His metronomic bowling has earned him comparisons with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood.
Nasser Hussain believes Robinson, who has worked under Jason Gillespie at Sussex, would be a “real asset” for England later in the year in the Ashes series in Australia.
“I think Shane [Warne] in the commentary box compared him to Josh Hazlewood of Australia, that sort of bowler that is at you all the time – and that’s a good compliment, because he’s a serious bowler, especially where England are going next. He will be a real asset Down Under,” the former skipper added.
With the series levelled in Leeds, both England and India travel back to London for the fourth Test, at Kennington Oval, starting September 2nd.
