Ollie Watkins is England’s hero after his goal sent the Three Lions into the final of Euro 2024 final – and perhaps also sent something of a transfer reminder to Liverpool.

The Aston Villa striker struck just as the clock ticked over the 90-minute mark, with England locked at 1-1 with the Netherlands. Harry Kane’s controversial first-half penalty had earlier brought Gareth Southgate’s side level after Xavi Simons’ superb opener.

The game looked to be heading for extra-time until Watkins’ superb finish sealed England’s place in the final in Berlin on Sunday, where they will take on Spain.

Watkins’ moment of glory will not come as a surprise to any fans of Premier League sides, especially Liverpool supporters. The Reds have seen first-hand just what the 28-year-old is capable of, including a hat-trick during a 7-2 win for Villa back in 2020.

Not only that, but Liverpool has been linked with a move for Watkins over the years, including in the past couple of months. According to HITC in May, the Reds were among a host of admirers of the striker, along with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

That was back when there were concerns that Villa may have to cash in to avoid breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, although with the PSR deadline having now passed, it’s unlikely they would be in the same position now. In any case, Villa was said to have no interest in letting their star striker go.

The whole of Europe has just seen exactly why. His strike to send England into the final showed off his clinical instincts perfectly – instincts that no doubt would have appealed to Liverpool and those other clubs mentioned.

According to Transfermarkt, Watkins is valued at $70m (£55m/€65m). You can guarantee that goal will have just added a few more millions on to that.

It was a moment that reminded Liverpool just how much talent the Villa striker has. But his stock is sky-high, and with millions getting added to his price tag all the time, FSG would face an almighty fee to try and tempt Villa to even consider selling their star striker. says: What a strike from Watkins. That was worthy of winning any game, let alone a semi-final of a European Championship. He would be a very attractive prospect for Liverpool, although he’ll almost certainly prove too expensive for the Reds, especially after tonight.
