Olympics-Cycling-Australians crash in training, Hoskins taken to hospital

(Adds Edmondson comment) By Martyn Herman RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Australia's world record-holding team pursuiters crashed heavily in training at the Olympic cycle track on Monday with Melissa Hoskins taken to hospital. There were no immediate details on what injuries she sustained. "Hoskins was stretchered off the track as a precaution and has been taken to hospital for assessment," a spokesman for the Australian Olympic team said. "An update on her condition will be provided when available." Hoskins was riding at high speed with team mates Ashlee Ankudinoff, Georgia Baker, Amy Cure and Annette Edmondson when four of the five riders hit the boards on turn three. Edmondson was the only rider to avoid crashing. Ankudinoff, Baker and Cure walked off the track and were being treated for track friction burns and bruises. Later Edmondson said on Twitter: "Training crash update: Everyone is OK! Bruised, battered but OK. Thanks for all the supportive messages!" Hoskins, Ankudinoff, Cure and Edmondson broke the world record for the 4,000m event at the world championships in France last year and are strong medal contenders in Rio.
