Preview: It's been a long wait for the marquee event in international cricket's shortest, highest-tempo format. The pandemic-affected Twenty20 World Cup will finally kick off on Sunday with no clear cut favorites for the title.

The seventh edition of the biggest event in the T20 format kicks off on Sunday with co-hosts Oman taking on Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the opening match of the preliminary round that will witness eight teams divided into two groups fight for the four remaining spots in the Super 12 stage later in the tournament that will get the campaigns of the automatically qualified teams underway.

Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood won the toss and opted to have a bowl.

Trends will emerge well before the leading title contenders get into action. The top eight teams have directly qualified for the Super 12 stage, which begins from 23 October.

Four teams will join them by qualifying in Round 1, which kicks off Sunday with Oman taking on Papua New Guinea. Scotland and Bangladesh will continue the Group B action on Monday.

Group A comprises 2009 finalist Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands and Namibia. The two top teams from each group will advance.
