One Bad Hour Cost England – David Gower Applauded India’s ‘Stunning’ Effort On Day 5 At Lord’s
Former England captain David Gower waxed lyrical on India‘s “stunning” display with bat and ball on Day 5 at Lord’s as Virat Kohli’s team took a 1-0 lead in the series.
After being in a favourable position with the wicket of Rishabh Pant early on Day 5, England allowed tailenders Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami to forge an 89-run stand for the ninth wicket which batted the hosts out of the contest. After that, the relentless Indian pace attack bowled them out in less than 52 overs to help India to only their third ever Test match win at the iconic Lord’s ground.
David Gower reckons England had one bad hour in the morning, when they failed to dismiss Bumrah and Shami, and that cost them the game.
“That was a stunning final day performance. Literally stunning. The last hour and a half in the morning, that really decided the game. My great friend and ex-colleague Michael Atherton often used to say ‘Test matches can be lost in one bad session’. Well, that was one bad hour that cost England,” David Gower told Cricket.com.
“But hats off to India. Just the way bowlers kept going, just the way Kohli’s enthusiasm kept them going, just showed everyone how passionate this Indian team is. They are 1-0 up and they fully deserve it,” he added.

Both the teams had their noses ahead at some point in the match. While the Indian team was happier at the end of Day 1, the hosts romped back in the match courtesy of a James Anderson five-fer and another big century from Joe Root.
After the fall of Pant’s wicket, it was England who were in the driver’s seat, however, the Indian team turned the tide in their favour thereafter.
David Gower, who featured in 117 Tests and averaged 44.25 with the bat, says that it was a classic game and one which went into the final session of the last day – unlike many Tests in the past few years.
“It was a great match. It is what we, as traditionalists, like. We like a game that lasts all the way through five days, has twists and turns, has people wondering who is going to win and there are enough twists and turns to keep a fan going over five days. That’s what we love about Test cricket. That’s what makes it entertaining – in a very different way to white-ball cricket we see so much of, these days,” the 64-year-old stated.
England have recalled Dawid Malan for the third Test at Headingley, starting August 25th. Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, and Jack Leach have been released from the squad.
