ONE FC Battle of Lions Results: Igor Svirid Wins Middleweight Title in 17 Seconds

Igor Svirid extended his win streak to ten with the biggest victory of his career at ONE FC: Battle of Lions, stopping Leandro Ataides after just 17 seconds to become the organization’s inaugural 185-pound champion.

The Kazakh fighter had already won six fights in 2014, but came into this bout as an underdog because Ataides had already registered two hugely impressive first-round knockouts inside the ONE FC cage.

It was a jab that did the damage, as Ataides walked straight into a stiff left hand from Svirid and never recovered, getting backed up against the cage and pounded with punches for what was the first defeat of his career.

The co-main event also saw a Brazilian stopped, as Koji Ando survived a striking match with Zorobabel Moreira just long enough for the former ONE FC 155-pound title challenger to run out of gas and then came on strong in the latter stages to secure a win that came very late in the final round of the fight.

Moreira used front kicks and low kicks to good effect in a fight that was fought almost exclusively standing up. Ando never found a way to cope with the range of the tall Brazilian, but unfortunately for ‘Zoro,’ who was fighting for the first time in two years, the Japanese lightweight turned out to have superior stamina.

Realizing that Moreira was on his last legs, Ando stepped up the pace in the final 90 seconds of the fight. He got his reward when a series of punches saw the exhausted Brazilian drop to the ground and a soccer kick secured the come from behind TKO win.

The night ended very differently for the other Brazilian on the card, as Luis Santos scored the thirty-fifth TKO win of his career, destroying Bakhtiyar Abbasov in under a minute with a knee to the stomach, leaving the Azerbaijani collapsed in agony.

The warning signs were there for Abbasov, as Santos landed a couple of left kicks early on in the fight, and the Brazilian finished in ruthless fashion with a knee so hard it instantly crumpled the Combat Sambo veteran.

As well as being one of the most devastating strikers in the division, Santos also has a black belt in BJJ and looks to be a credible potential opponent for reigning 170-pound champion Ben Askren with an immediate ONE FC title shot a distinct possibility.

Earlier in the night, Christophe Vandijck showcased his impressive Judo base by defeating Dwayne Hinds by ground and pound in round one. The Belgian used a Judo throw to get the fight down and then unleashed a series of powerful strikes from top position, which forced Hinds to tap out.
