Gary Neville mocked Fraser Forster and Tottenham after giving Manchester United a lifeline during their topsy-turvy 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final win on Thursday.

Ange Postecoglou's side stormed into a 3-0 lead in north London thanks to Dominic Solanke's brace and a neat finish from Dejan Kulusevski. At that point, Spurs looked like they were cruising into the last four but then chaos struck as United scored twice within seven minutes to offer themselves a route back in.

And both were caused by errors from second-choice goalkeeper Forster. United's first saw Forster give the ball away inside his own box before Bruno Fernandes squared across to Joshua Zirkzee to slot home from close-range. Then United's second was calamitous, as Forster's clearance hit Amad Diallo, who closed down the Spurs 'keeper with some speed, and bounced into the back of the net.

After United's second, which was scored in the 70th minute, Neville couldn't believe what he was witnessing. Speaking on co-commentary, Neville told Sky Sports: "This is one of the most Tottenham things you'll see. You would almost have United as favourites. They can smell blood.

"I mean what are they [Tottenham] doing? Oh, Fraser! He thinks he's got time, he thinks he's got an age but Amad closes down with unbelievable tenacity and he goes for it."

Fortunately for Tottenham, they survived a wave of United pressure before scoring a fourth in the 88th minute. It came in fortuitous fashion, however, as Son Heung-min's in-swinging corner went straight in after Altay Bayındır appeared to flap at it but the ball flashed straight past him and hit the back of the net.

United still managed to pull another back deep into stoppage-time through Jonny Evans' header but it was too little too late as Spurs managed to hold on to book their place in the semi-final. Postecoglou's side are now set to face Liverpool in a two-legged last four tie in January and February.

Delivering his reaction to the performance and win, Postecoglou said: "We were. We played so well, well in control of the game. It’s the way our season has gone a little bit, we self-inflicted some pain on ourselves and then we had to scramble to get a foothold again, ended up getting a fourth and winning the game.

"It should have been a lot more comfortable than it ended up being but having said that I still can’t get away from the fact this group of players is doing an unbelievable job at the moment to get us through this. The fact is we again scored four goals and played some outstanding football.

"We got tired in the second half because we have a small number of players we keep putting out there. Obviously, that made it tighter than the game should have been, but I'm so proud of the players' efforts."
