Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has come up with a new theory as to why the club have not offered Mohamed Salah a new contract. The Egyptian has been one of the standout performers for the Reds this season, with Arne Slot's side top of the Premier League and eight points clear on Manchester City ahead of a crunch clash between the two sides at Anfield next weekend.

Salah has been influential for the Reds, scoring ten goals in the top flight so far this season, setting up another six for his Liverpool teammates. The 32-year-old's contract at Anfield expires at the end of the current campaign, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van-Dijk.

Liverpool know losing all three players this summer would be a major blow, and fans are hoping all three players will stay at the club beyond this summer. However, after the recent win over Southampton, Salah revealed he had not been presented with a new contract offer, leading to plenty of speculation online.

"Well, we are almost in December and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I'm probably more out than in," Salah said when asked about his long-term future.

"You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven't received anything yet about my future.

"I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans' hands. Let's wait and see. Of course [no offer is disappointing], yeah."

Former Reds midfielder Murphy came up with a new theory as to why the club had not offered their star man a new deal, despite his brilliant start to the season.

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Champions League odds, Murphy said: "We will know sooner rather than later what will happen with Mohamed Salah, he looks amazing physically and is as sharp as he’s been in a long time. The way he lives his life, there is no reason he can’t carry on the way he is for the next two or three seasons, the thing we don’t know is the business side of things.

"We don’t know whether is asking for three years or asking for more money, for example if he wants a four year deal and more money then it’s not viable for the club. The only reason he won’t stay is because the club don’t want to pay him the money he wants over the length of contract he wants, that’s my reading of it.

"I think he does want to stay at the club and he’s made up his mind. I think he will stay at the club and so will Virgil van Dijk, with Alexander-Arnold leaving."
