Ons Jabeur handed top seeding for Adelaide International 1

World No 2 Ons Jabeur heads the field for the Adelaide International 1 WTA 500 tournament as the top seed.

Jabeur and second seed Aryna Sabalenka enjoy byes into the second round of the 30-player event.

The Tunisian star will face either Sorana Cirstea or a qualifier in the second round in Adelaide.

Adelaide might see Jabeur face Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2022 Wimbledon championship match.

Rybakina, who won her maiden Grand Slam match by defeating Jabeur, faces fifth-seeded American Danielle Collins in the opening round.

World no 8 and third seed Daria Kasatkina, begins her campaign in this section against a qualifier. Former world number one Victoria Azarenka is also in this quarter of the draw.

If former World No 1 Azarenka wins her first-round match against a qualifier, she will face either No.6 seed Anett Kontaveit or 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year Zheng Qinwen in the second round.

The third quarter of the draw has a handful of first-round blockbusters as we look into the bottom half of the draw. Veronika Kudermetova, seeded fourth and ranked ninth in the world, will face Amanda Anisimova in a tantalising first round.

Also in this quartersection, former World No.1 Garbine Muguruza will meet 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu in an intriguing first-round battle between Grand Slam champions.

Another fascinating opening encounter in the third quarter features seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 Roland Garros champion, and former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova has incidentally won five of her past eight matches against Ostapenko at WTA Tour level.

Second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka leads the bottom section of the Adelaide International 1 draw. Sabalenka, ranked fifth in the world, will also enjoy a bye in the first round before facing either Zhang Shuai or Liudmila Samsonova in the second round.

Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No. 8 seed, also finds herself in the bottom half of the draw. In her opening round, Alexandrova will take on erstwhile French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova.

The Adelaide International 1 serves as the season opener for most its field and is the first of two back-to-back WTA 500 events over the next two weeks in the South Australian Capital city.

The imaginatively named Adelaide International 2 will follow with a main-draw start date of Monday, January 9.

This week’s event is the last chance for players to improve their ranking before seeding for the Australian Open is finalised.
