Jailed Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been bruised in a prison brawl with another inmate while they waited in a queue to use a pay phone.

Pistorius, whose sentence for murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was more than doubled last month, sustained a minor injury in an alleged assault at the Attridgevill Correctional Centre last week.

Singabakho Nxumalo, of the Department of Correctional Services, said that Pistorius, 31, had a medical check-up and the incident is being investigated.

The fight could now see him losing privileges including use of the phone an access to the jail tuck shop.

Mr Nxumalo told MailOnline: “He was involved in an altercation with another inmate over the use of a public phone in the special care unit, where both offenders are detained, the men know each other well.

“As standard operating procedure regarding cases of alleged assaults, the Department of Correctional Services has launched an internal investigation into the matter to establish the facts and to ensure that appropriate action is taken as incidents of assault are not allowed.

“We want to know that proper security protocols were followed by prison staff.”

Pistorius, a double amputee runner who won worldwide acclaim winning in the Paralympics and competing in the Olympics, shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead in his home on Valentine’s Day 2013, claiming he thought she was an intruder.

His original six-year sentence was ruled “inappropriate” by Supreme Court of Appeal judges last month, and increased it to South Africa’s minimum of 15 years for murder.

With time already served, Pistorius is now serving 13 years.
