Oscar Robertson hopes Russell Westbrook breaks triple-double record

After Westbrook historically recorded his 42nd triple double on Sunday, he will take a break when the Thunder take on the Timberwolves.

Russell Westbrook is fast approaching some impressive history, and the person he's ready to pass is on his side.

Oscar Robertson's record of 41 triple-doubles in one NBA regular season is hopelessly looking on as Westbrook's total continues to climb. Heading into Friday's game against the Spurs, Westbrook needed just four triple-doubles, with eight games left,to surpass Robertson.

Some might think Robertson would be quietly hoping Westbrook catches a case of poor shooting down the stretch to preserve his record set during the 1961-62 season. That, however, is not the case.

"I hope he does it. I always thought he was a great basketball player," Robertson said Friday of Westbrook, via ESPN.com. "I was talking to some basketball people the other night, and I said, 'I don't think any of these guards can beat him on a one-on-one game.' I think he's been tremendous for the team, his fans and also for television."

Even though the Thunder are long shots to emerge as title contenders during the postseason, Robertson thinks Westbrook should win MVP this season.

"I think it's Westbrook. That's what I really think," Robertson said. "Because years ago it was tough to win an MVP because it was based on winning championships — and [Bill] Russell with theCeltics. They dominated. But one year, Wilt [Chamberlain] averaged 50 points a game and 29 rebounds and me a triple-double, but Billwon because his team advanced and we did not.

"It's changed now. A lot of people understand what an MVP means. They understand basketball better than they did years ago."

Westbrook is averaging 31.8 points, 10.6 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game this season. He is on track to join Robertson as the only players in NBA history to have averaged a triple-double for a season.
