Michael Owen has insisted that Manchester United are in the Premier League title race, although he does think that Arsenal remains as favourites.

The Gunners were involved in a frantic game against Aston Villa, but they eventually turned it on to secure a 4-2 away victory.

Manchester City’s slip against Nottingham Forest has handed a boost to United, who could gain some ground on them with a win against Leicester.

As things stand, United are third in the table with a game in hand on Man City. Owen believes that United are in the title race, especially if they beat Leicester.

“And nobody is mentioning Manchester United,” Owen told Premier League Productions.

“Manchester City are involved. But if Manchester United win their game in hand, they are only three points behind City.

“So you cannot rule anything out at the moment, but you have to say that Arsenal are in the driver’s seat.”

Erik ten Hag has done a fine job at Old Trafford so far after navigating a difficult start with his new side.

Since returning from the World Cup, Man United have only lost one game and they have been a worthy opponent to each of the sides they have faced.

They will return to Premier League action against Leicester, following their midweek draw with Barcelona in the Europa League.

Ten Hag kept his cards close to his chest when he was recently asked if his side are in the Premier League title race this season.

“We don’t think about that so far,” Ten Hag told the club website. “What we have to do is put us in April in the right position, so our thinking can only be on the next game and how we can be better than we were in the previous game.

“We have to think about going from game to game to help us put the right energy and focus in.

“It does mean that we have to win on Sunday. We have to collect the three points against Leicester. That demands a lot of energy and demands high standards.”

Despite being within touching distance of their local rivals, an eight-point gap still remains between United and Arsenal.

The Gunners have been the outstanding side in the league this season and it will require an inspired run of form for United to catch them up.

With Marcus Rashford continuing to impress in the final third, anything is possible for this United side under Ten Hag right now.
