Everyone has a favourite notebook they use to jot down things to remember – and here's how to give yours a new lease of life by making a pretty notebook cover to go over it.

The best part about this easy craft idea is you're likely to have everything you need for it already, so it's ideal for crafting on a budget. Making your own notebook protector is a great way to use up scraps of wallpaper left over from decorating your home. Or if you prefer, thick wrapping paper will work just as well.

Make your notebook cover using any print paper you like – it's a lovely way to express yourself and create something personal and unique.

Happy crafting!

What you need

  • Notebook

  • Ruler

  • Wallpaper or thick wrapping paper

  • Scissors

  • Double sided tape

  • Glue

How to make

1. Measure your notebook, including the spine, and cut a piece of paper that is 2-3cm deeper and 15-20cm longer than the book.

2. Fold over the top and bottom of the paper and secure with double sided tape to lose the sharp edge but keeping a little extra space around the height of the book.

3. Place the closed book spine on the paper, then drop it to one side. Cover the book with the paper, fold the extra inside the front cover, and do the same for the back cover. Make sure the cover fits snugly, but not too tight. Glue the paper's end inside the front and back covers.

TIP Use double-sided tape or glue dots to secure the paper to the notebook cover before folding it over.
