OXFORD United are reportedly interested in a move for striker James Norwood following his exit from Ipswich Town.

The 31-year-old has attracted interest from a host of Sky Bet League One sides, however newly promoted Bristol Rovers are the favourites to sign him.

Joey Barton’s Rovers are believed to be in advanced talks to sign Norwood, who Karl Robinson described as the ‘calibre’ of player he was looking to sign in January.

Before the winter transfer window opened, the U’s were linked with both Marcus Browne – at the time still at Middlesborough – and Norwood.

Although Robinson didn’t comment on the duo directly, he said they were the standard of player he was looking to recruit.

Browne eventually joined United on deadline day in January, penning a two and a half year contract with the option of an extra 12 months.

Norwood remained at Portman Road, where he struggled for regular game time.

He did however score 92 goals in 180 games for Tranmere Rovers, prior to joining Ipswich in July 2019.

Charlton Athletic, Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth have all reportedly looked at a deal for Norwood this summer.

Robinson’s current options to lead the line are Matty Taylor, entering his third season as a permanent player with the U’s, and Sam Baldock, who signed a two-year contract with the club in May.
