Patrice Evra has continued his war of words with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola by naming the big reason for his recent Champions League woes.

Evra began the spat between the pair when he claimed last month that Guardiola “takes away your responsibilities”. The ex-Manchester United full-back added that the Spaniard “doesn’t want leaders or personalities”.

Guardiola subsequently hit back at Evra. The manager insisted he was happy to list a number of players with personality who have helped him become one of Europe’s most respected managers.

Guardiola then joked that Evra is looking for a way back into Old Trafford following his retirement.

He also had a pop at Evra’s Man Utd team that lost to his Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final.

Speaking after the Man Utd legends team lost to their Liverpool counterparts, Evra continued the spat.

He said: “I didn’t understand to be honest, I am not watching that much in the media. Then a friend sends me Guardiola talking about ‘maybe Patrice Evra wants a job’ and then after ‘we destroyed them with Barcelona’.

“I was working for Amazon Prime and I just said playing under Guardiola, when you have personality, it must be difficult, when you have ego.

“I am talking about players when they played with him and they always say he has been a problem. What I said was nice, but now if you want to go talk, I will talk. I don’t see any City player who loves him.

“He is a genius, but as a person, I don’t know him personally. I was surprised he even had time to answer to Patrice Evra, I am a retired player, I am doing my job.”

Evra added that Guardiola has not won the Champions League since 2011 because he is not still working with his Barcelona stars.

“I was a little surprised,” the Frenchman added. “But me, I am always happy, I don’t have any hate in my heart. But when people want to do some banter, I am ready for that.

“By the way, he wins because he had Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta and [Lionel] Messi. Of course you’re going to win the Champions League.

“But since he don’t have them, it is a long time ago he won the Champions League.”

City failed to win the Champions League again and this season it remains the only trophy Guardiola has not won in Manchester.

Following last season’s defeat in the final to Chelsea, Real Madrid stunned City with a semi-final comeback.

However, the Premier League side should have been out of sight in the first leg against Los Blancos.

And that is why new signing Erling Haaland could make the difference – City hope at least.

The Borussia Dortmund striker will move to the Etihad Stadium this summer. He could therefore prove the final piece in City’s Champions League puzzle.
