Patrick McEleney heads for Ballymena United as he follows Ruaidhri Higgins out of Derry City
Ballymena United have swooped for Patrick McEleney after the talented attacking midfielder called time on his Derry City career.
The 32-year-old follows manager Ruaidhri Higgins in leaving the Brandywell in the wake of their defeat to Drogheda United in the Sports Direct FAI Cup final last Sunday.
It brought to an end a difficult season for the Candystripes as their title challenge dissipated in the final weeks of the season before they eventually finished in fourth place.

Speculation intensified in recent days that Higgins would leave the club and on Friday morning it was confirmed that was the case.
McEleney's departure was also revealed with the former Dundalk man joining his brother Shane in departing his hometown club to switch to the Irish Premiership with Ballymena United.
Having made over 300 appearances for Derry City across two spells, McEleney said: “I want to thank everyone – fans, players and club for everything. The good times won’t be forgotten and as a Derry City fan, I will be back to support the team.”
Sky Blues boss Jim Ervin is delighted to have added McEleney to his squad saying: “Signing a player of Patrick’s calibre is an incredible boost for the club. He is a top-class footballer, widely respected across the game.
"His experience and winning mentality will be invaluable as we continue our exciting project. I want to extend my thanks to everyone involved in making this transfer possible.”
Derry now begin the search for a new manager with former assistant boss Paddy McLaughlin being mention in some circles for a return. He left the Brandywell back in February and admitted recently he was itching to get back involved in the game again.
