Patrick Vieira would not support a strike from Premier League players, but the Crystal Palace boss admitted he is worried about rushing his squad back from coronavirus.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola raised the possibility of a strike to try and address the issue of player welfare, insisting that just talking about the issue was not making any difference.

Palace had their last match against Watford postponed due to Claudio Ranieri’s side having a number of positive Covid test, and Vieira revealed there are also a couple of cases at the south London club.

But the Frenchman is not worried about the hectic Christmas schedule, and is instead concerned about ensuring those who have been out are not rushed back too soon.

“I don’t know if they would be right to do it, the only thing I can tell you is I am against this kind of strike,” Vieira said.

“What is really important at the moment is the voice of players or managers should be heard a little bit more.”

“I am not worried about the players’ welfare regarding the games during this period because it has been like that for years and years. What I am worried about is the players’ welfare regarding Covid.

“I think players coming back from a Covid situation and asking them to play, having not had enough training, is a lot on them. This is what I am worried about.”

Speaking ahead of his side’s Boxing Day clash at home to Leicester, Guardiola, who has complained about the number of matches over Christmas in previous years, suggested strong action may be required.

The Man City boss said: “Should the players and the managers be all together and make a strike, or something, because just through words it’s not going to be solved?”
