Paul Warne wants to keep Dajaune Brown at Derby County this month but is mindful of not stunting the striker's development.

After Lars-Jorgen Salvesen arrived on a deal from Viking FK for an undisclosed fee this week, competition for places as to who leads the forward line will be intense in the second half of the season.

Top scorer Jerry Yates is due to return to face Watford today after being rested in midweek for the penalty shootout defeat to Leyton Orient while Salvesen could be included on the bench.

Brown was excellent at Orient and scored at Brisbane Road but is yet to start regularly in the Championship although Warne has not been afraid to call upon the forward from the substitutes' bench.

Clubs further down the pyramid have constantly kept tabs on the forward who was the subject of a lot of interest in the summer, but Warne says the forward will benefit from being at Derby.

"If you're going to play up two up front, then ideally, you need four strikers. However, I also have Kayden Jackson who can play there as well," said Warne.

"With Dajaune it's something we are constantly monitoring. I think he has learned a lot from being in the building, but you could argue I could loan him out to any League One team, although there is no guarantee he would get any game time.

"He could leave here and go to Burton let's say - and no disrespect to them - but he could be their third-choice striker. I would rather Daj be here for as long as I can have him. However, I don't want to stunt his development.

"But nothing is more important to me currently than picking up points. If I think he has a benefit to staying—which he does—then as long as he is keen on staying, and I believe he is, then I've no reason to force a loan unnecessarily. I have to look after what is good for the club now and for the future."
