Callum McGregor insists Paulo Bernardo is exactly the type of player Celtic should be in the market for this summer.

Portugal Under-21 captain Bernardo has returned to Benfica after completing his season-long loan at Parkhead. But Brendan Rodgers could offer him a permanent stay in Glasgow as the Hoops weigh up the option to trigger a £6million release clause in his contract. Celts could also attempt to negotiate a reduced fee with Benfica as it's understood boss Roger Schmidt is ready to offload the 22-year-old.

Bernardo made the difference from the bench on Saturday as his shot was spilled by Jack Butland, putting the ball on a plate for fellow loan star Adam Idah to slot home and makes the headlines as the Scottish Cup-winning hero.

But skipper McGregor reserved special praise for Bernardo and believes the talented youngster has huge potential.

He said: "Paulo has been an important player for us. He has big technical quality and he's a young kid who wants to do well. That's the type of profile we want at the club. Hopefully we can bring him back.

"He's a great lad as well. He works ever so hard and he's a part of the group we have. Obviously the club will decide what happens, but that's certainly the profile we want. You want hungry players who are technically good and can come and make an impact as well."

Bernardo kept his cards close to his chest on Monday night as he thanked fans for their support throughout his year at the club. He wrote on Instagram: "Grateful for the season. Thank you very much for all the support."
