Pedro Porro: Fabrizio Romano reveals Tottenham contract length with club ‘closing in’ on crucial agreement
Tottenham Hotspur are confident they will be able to sign Pedro Porro before the transfer window closes, according to Fabrizio Romano – who has revealed how long the wing-back will be committing to the north London club for.
Porro has been heavily linked with a transfer to Tottenham throughout January and things have been heating up as the deadline approaches. As an attack-minded right wing-back, Porro is the kind of player Antonio Conte has been crying out for.
The Sporting CP star impressed against Tottenham in the Champions League earlier in the season. He has been on their radar ever since as a potential upgrade to Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.
Tottenham have made significant progress in their pursuit of Porro in recent hours. Earlier on Thursday, reports in Portugal suggested an agreement was close to being finalised.
Further encouragement came when David Ornstein reported of Sporting’s interest in Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey as a potential replacement for the Spaniard, who in turn has been getting closer to Tottenham.
Now, another respected source has pushed the Porro to Spurs story further. According to Fabrizio Romano, “all parties [are] confident to get it done.”
The transfer expert has relayed that Spurs and Sporting are “closing in on [an agreement for] the payment terms”. It is now believed that Tottenham will be paying for Porro in two or three instalments.
Sporting have been holding out for the value of Porro’s release clause, which stands at €45million (around £39.5m). Tottenham’s package will eventually come to an amount in that region.
Their expectation is that they will be able to get the deal over the line before the transfer deadline on January 31. Then, Conte will have a more reliable right-back at his disposal.
Pedro Porro to sign five-and-a-half-year contract
Romano has also clarified an important point regarding the contract waiting for Porro.
According to the Italian journalist, Porro will be signing a contract until 2028.
Since he is 23 years old, Tottenham would be getting some of Porro’s best years as he develops from the talent he already is into someone approaching his prime.
Porro has assisted 11 goals and scored three himself from 25 appearances across all competitions this season.
His overall record for Sporting since joining them from Manchester City – for whom he never made an appearance – reads 20 assists and 12 goals from 97 games.
Sporting are hoping they can still use Porro in Saturday’s Portuguese League Cup final against Porto. Thus, there might be one more appearance to add. But that will be that in terms of his spell with the Lisbon-based side; his destiny seems to be to become a Tottenham player.
In turn, the chances of summer signing Spence leaving on loan will increase. Reports elsewhere have claimed that Brentford have been in talks to take him for the rest of the season.
Right now, Porro is more ready for a first-team role with a club of Tottenham’s stature. Hence, if everything does cross the line, Conte will surely be happier with the balance of his squad in that department.
