New Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro has given his reaction after sealing a deadline day switch from Sporting Lisbon, saying he ‘feels great’ about the move. 

The Portuguese defender also described the impact he can have on Spurs’ season as they look to reignite their push for Champions League football next season.

It was touch and go whether all the paperwork would be signed in time to complete the transfer, but the move has been very well received by Tottenham supporters.

Speaking to the official Spurs Twitter page, Porro gave his reaction to his long-awaited return to the Premier League.

He said: “I feel great about the move. I really wanted to come here. It’s a unique opportunity for me and I hope everything goes well.

“I can bring a lot of character and personality to this team.

“Above all, my desire and will to win. I’ve also managed to watch quite a few league games this season, I’ve been following our games too, and in this case, I can say that now!

“So, yes, I can provide character, desire, and a great attitude.

The former Manchester City defender could be set to face his old club on his Spurs debut, with Conte’s side facing the Premier League champions at home on Sunday.

Porro signing can finally put an end to Conte’s right-back concerns

As mentioned, Tottenham are currently looking to reignite their season after finding themselves three points adrift from the top four, having played at least one game more than all of the teams above them.

One of Conte’s biggest conundrums this season has been the right back position. He has generally opted to use Emerson Royal as his first choice, while Matt Doherty and Djed Spence have featured sporadically.

However, Porro’s arrival prompted Conte to allow both Doherty (permanent deal to Atletico Madrid) and Spence (loan to Rennes) to leave the club before the window closed – suggesting he expects his new signing to play a major role in the remainder of Spurs’ season.

The highly-rated defender began his career in his native Spain, before joining Manchester City in 2019.

He then went on a first loan spell to Valladolid, before embarking on a second two-year spell with Sporting Lisbon, who made his stay permanent last summer.

Porro, who has been a key performer for Sporting this season having scored three goals and provided 11 assists in 26 appearances in all competitions, will wear the number 23 shirt at Spurs.

The deal is another inital loan, but the London side have an obligation to buy set at £40m, so he is expected to remain at Spurs for many years to come.

Indeed, it will be interesting if he goes straight into Conte’s starting XI against City on Sunday. If he can score on his debut, he might just bring the house down.
